饅頭屋に生まれて、亀山社中内でも人一倍勉学に勤しんだ方でした。社中のルールに反したということで腹を切りましたが、龍馬は随分と惜しんだそうです。

城下で饅頭を売り歩いていたので、饅頭屋長次郎と呼ばれていました。学問への情熱がつよく、地元では竜馬と同じく河田小龍に学び、さらに江戸に出て安積艮斎の門下生となっています。神戸海軍操練所に入り、龍馬と海援隊の前身である亀山社中を設立した人物であります。そんな長次郎は、社中の資金を不正に処理して英国への密航を企てたが、実現の前に計画がばれ、社中の隊士から切腹を命じられ1866年に享年29才で死去しています。

龍馬の生まれた町記念館の近くに、坂本龍馬と海援隊で共に行動した近藤長次郎の住まいがあったことを示す石碑がたっていました。当時の面影を残す建物はなく、些か寂しい位でした。

龍馬と共に長崎で主に活躍した幕末の人物で、彼もこの町で生まれました。今では屋敷跡と云う石碑が建っているだけの場所です。

高知市立龍馬の生まれたまち記念館から歩いて5分。通り沿いにそれを示す石柱が建っています。
ところで、近藤長次郎は、饅頭屋の息子。しかし、才能を山内容堂にも認められ、神戸海軍操練所に入所。亀山社中設立にも同志として加わるなど、高知の人材の厚さを示す人物だと思います。

坂本龍馬と海援隊で共に行動した饅頭屋長次郎こと、近藤長次郎ですが、その高知市上町二丁目7番辺りの邸跡には石碑があります。道路を挟んだ向かいは才谷屋がありましたので、坂本龍馬とはまさに竹馬の友というわけです。今は石碑しかありませんが、龍馬の生まれたまち記念館の2Fには、饅頭屋で使われたという道具も展示されています。

坂本龍馬誕生地や生まれた街記念館などを見学した後、鏡川に向かって歩く途中にありますが、石碑のみですので、気をつけないと通り過ぎます。少し寂しさもありますが、本当に龍馬誕生地の近くで当時の龍馬の生活が思い浮かぶようです。

土佐っ歩でボランティアガイドさんと行きました、龍馬誕生地と才谷屋跡の間を
少しばかり南に下ったあたりにあります、ここに饅頭屋もあったのでしょうか？
石碑が一本と石に刻まれた案内板が一つ、たぶん言われなければ判らないで、通り過ぎてしまうほど地味でした。

土佐っぽ地図をたよりに石碑を探すが、石碑一本となると中々見つけられなかった。しかもこの石碑はアパートのゴミ置き場の対面にあった。。。歴史に名を残せても住処は跡形もなくなってしまうものなのだと痛感した。
