Taisuke Itagaki lived from 1837 tom1919. His father was considered to be a middle-ranking samurai in an area which is now part of the Kōchi Prefecture. He was a famed politician who stood for liberalism.

Taisuke Itagaki is a statesman in Meiji Period. His portrait was used for a 1000 yen bill before. This is why he is quite familiar for Japanese people of certain age or above. His words "even Itagaki die, freedom will not die" are well known. This statue of Itagaki is just on the way to castle. So, when you go to the castle, you should not miss it.…

This statue is nothing that spectacular, but hearing my friend describe the history of Taisuke Itagaki's politics lead to an interesting discussion. If you go see it, do a bit of research on him so you have a better understanding of why the statue is there than I did at first.
