A delightful surprise
Nov 2018
We'd been pretty disappointed by the quality of local art galleries in Japan but this was a delightful exception. The architecture is striking, apparently modelled on a traditional building, and using water to dramatic effect outside. Inside it's large and airy and designed around a central courtyard with a shallow pool and a stage, where we were lucky enough to see an interpretive dance. Surprisingly it has a good collection of Chagall. The main exhibition was of Yoshitoshi's 19th century woodblocks and Ushitoshi's unpleasantly gory ones. The works of a Japanese flower photographer were also on display. The highlight for us because it was so unusual was an interactive performance in which museum attendees could opt to be blindfolded then led by exquisite dancers by the merest touches and instructions through a hearing device (I think) through parts of the gallery. We've not seen that before and were mesmerised by the beautiful movements of the dancers. We were there during the weekend, hence the special performances. We asked a staff member if a large poster of one of the prints was available for sale (several were on the walls but none in the shop). A charming girl with excellent English was called, she said unfortunately not, then disappeared, only to reappear with one she'd asked the manager for. A gift. How kind. Our guide and our hotel knew nothing about this gallery or its whereabouts but in fact it's not far out of the centre of town, only about 10 minutes by tram then another few walking up and over a bridge. Don't miss it.

A lovely museum that features the work of an excellent Japanese.

We particularly liked the pictures that the artist painted along the Silk Road. His use of vivid colors isa highlight of his work.

High quality art gallery - with lots of Chagall!
Oct 2018 • Couples
This is a very well curated gallery, far better than in many much larger cities around the world. It is housed in a striking new neo-classical building. It is the home to both a regular collection and to special exhibitions. The regular collection includes, astonishingly, some excellent Chagall oil paintings and a large number of equally good Chagall prints. If you are remotely interested in Chagall or Russian or French art it is worth going to Kochi just to see this collection. Indeed, the building itself is worth visiting as an example of the Japanese take on European classical architecture. Staff are knowledgeable and helpful, although not much English is spoken. Really outstanding regional gallery.

I'm surprised by the quality of their curating power

People from Kochi are heartwarming in a word. As soon as you land in the airport, you will feel and touch the atmosphere of the local people. When I had a talk with Ms. Tomoko Mukaiyama, a great pianist and scriptwriter who lives and plays in the Netherlands and asked her the reason why she decided to make her play in Kochi Art Museum, she immediately replied to me that the Director of the museum is the best patron for contemporary dance performance and his comments are always impressive. Exterior design of the museum is beyond expectation, where is surrounded by the pond and there is a pond in the courtyard of the museum. You enjoy the city, go to the museum and then will enjoy countryside of Kochi city by car. Kochi will be one of the most impressive cities in Japan.
