We went into this little museum on a recent cruise visit to Kochi - it is dedicated to the Yosakoi festivals, where participants wear brightly coloured costumes while dancing. There was a video to watch which was a great help as there was minimal signage in English. The film was self explanatory and gave a good overview of the festival. There were lots of costumes on display - very colourful! And even better, we could try some on ourselves and take photos. A really good museum and free to enter too!

Staff was really trying to make it a fun experience. Someone sent me a TV special about the Yosakoi Festival later and they should show it at the center to English speakers. We had a translator so I don't know if they have an English speaker

Cruise ships typically offer a free shuttle to the City Town Hall Bus Station. One block from the bus station is the Kochi Yosakoi Information Exchange Center which is dedicated to the Yosakoi Festival which is held in Kochi.

The exchange center consists of the “Yosakoi Circle” of history and knowledge and the “Yosakoi Square” of evolutions and experiences. There is the “Yosakoi Theater” which runs films on the 60-year history of the Yosakoi Festival on a 150-inch screen. In the “Yosakoi Taiken (experience) Corner,” visitors can experience the “Seicho Yosakoi Naruko Odori” dance while holding traditional “naruko” bird clappers, or put on festival costumes and take commemorative pictures. There is also a special corner where visitors can make their own “naruko” clappers traditionally used to drive birds away from crops.

Its free to walk through and worth an quick introduction to the culture of Kochi.

Yosakoi Festival occurs every August, but this center offers a glimpse into the Yosakoi festival all year round. The displays are fabulous like the colorful costumes on mannequins, the noisy wooden gadgets that are used during the dance. It showcases the history of the festival with posters from the 1980s. One can borrow Yosakoi costumes for taking your photos. Staff is very courteous and knowledgeable. Although there are hardly any signs in English, this is one example of "one object or photo is worth a thousand words"

It is at the end of Harimayabashi Shopping Street. Visit there before you watch Yosakoi Matsuri. The staffs there very friendly and able to converse in English, something that is kinda hard to find in Kochi.

I went with my 2 yo daughter and she enjoyed spending time at the museum where they have dressed her with the typical yosakoy dancing clothes and teach her the basic of this dance. It was a nice time spent there.
