・Otesuji, Kochi City, Kochi Prefecture.
・A market is held only on Sundays, with tents set up on the side of the road. The vegetables sold at each location are so large and cheap. If I lived nearby, I would like to come shopping every week.
・On the way, the wife of a shop owner asked me if I could fix the sunshade tent that had been blown off by the wind and secure it with clothespins. I helped her, and she gave me some vegetables as a thank you.
・I felt bad that she thanked me for not doing anything special. I refused many times, but she still said, "Take them," so I finally took her up on her offer💦
・I felt a wonderful sense of "the kindness of the local people" and "a community built on helping each other."

For a couple years I used to live a few miles away from Kochi City, and once every month or two I'd ride the streetcar in to check out the Sunday market. There are fruits and vegetables for sale there, and woodcarvings, and many types of knives. Lots of stuff. I can't say I ever bought a whole lot except knives for souvenirs (I had a cheaper place to buy fresh fruit) but it is fun to check it all out, then maybe wander back through the long covered shopping street that runs parallel to the market street.

It might not be the most exciting thing in the whole world, but if you are from outside Japan and visiting Kochi City anyway, I feel it is a must-see while you are there. I think the market only happens one Sunday per month, though, if I remember right.

The Kochi Sunday Market is a must if in the area. I altered my plans for a trip just to make sure I would be in Kochi on a Sunday. Prior to going, I read that the market has been going on for hundreds of years. It starts near the castle on a single road that stretches over a kilometer. I started early here, around 7:30 am and spent a couple hours here walking up and down looking at everything the vendors had to offer. For the most part the market was full of fresh produce. But there were other vendors here selling goods like knives, antiques, plants, etc. There were a few food vendors here as well, I tried the tempura sweet potatoes and went back for seconds, they were great! Markets, are a great way to immerse yourself in local cultures and the Kochi Market should not be missed.

Stretching across a few streets, there were many stalls . Most of the stalls sell agricultural products - vegetables, fruits., flowers. We went there hoping to get a good breakfast but was disappointed. The only stall with places to sit to eat is at a udon stall. As such , there were many customers, q up for 30 minutes before we got our order. Seats were limited. A other stall selling hot food is a stall selling meat skewers and Okonomiyaki. The other food choice is cakes , bread, biscuits. No stalls selling hot coffee/ tea. It is a good place for locals to get their daily groceries but for tourists ,just a place to look, see , go take photos

I've been to many markets all over the world and so often they are set up for tourists or have been taken over by tourists. The Kochi Sunday market is a local instotution which is more than 300 years old. It runs more than a kilometer long headng toward Kochi Castle. This is truly a wonderfully charming stroll. Here you can see local farmers selling some of strangest fruits and vegetables I've ever seen. There are wonderful flowers, sweets, treats, trinkets, and local crafts, including pottery. There was an old gentleman who used river stones and fashioned them into little figurines. Possibly more lovely than the wares, is the chance to listen to locals bartering and gossiping.

I've spent a weekend in Kochi so, luckily, I was able to visit the famous Sunday Market. I would recommend you to come here early in the morning, so you can have breakfast at one of the many food stalls. The Market is located very close to other famous spots (Hirome Ichiba, Obiyamachi and Kochi Castle). You can also find many shops that sell traditional crafts, so it's a great spot for buying unique souvenirs.

We came specifically to be in Kochi for this Sunday market.
The market stretches from this izakaya restaurant 追手筋宴舞堂 to Hirome market and beyond along the road westwards from Hasuikemachidori Station. For those who drive, you can use the restaurant or Hirome market as destinations and park at coin operated parkings or at Hirome market itself. Note that one side of this dual lane carriageway is used for the market so don't be afraid to drive on the other side of the carriageway.
The stalls are plentiful along the whole stretch of road but they are basically selling the same produce...and produce that we can also find in local produce shops. It lacks the vibrancy found in some European markets.
Just come here for a Sunday morning or afternoon walk is fine...

Even on a rainy day this is a must. The long stretch of venders selling fresh produce, pickled vegetables to knives and other pottery items was a sight to see. We were there towards the end but still found it to be just as lively and interesting. Vendors were super friendly and accommodating. They even peeled and cut the fruits for us, as we wanted to eat it right away. To see the people, especially seniors, interact with each other and having a good time makes it more of a social event for them than work. It was a nice atmosphere, especially for the younger ones to see. Totally a fun place !

This was a local Sunday market. It wasn't a show for tourists but local people buying and selling their produce. I loved walking up and down and looking at the strange things on offer. It's mostly food and some beautiful plants but you can also find kitchenware and ornaments. I think it's expected that you haggle on price with some things but don't be rude, the Japanese are very polite people. Hardly anything written in English anywhere, you'll be left guessing !
