Stretching across a few streets, there were many stalls . Most of the stalls sell agricultural products - vegetables, fruits., flowers. We went there hoping to get a good breakfast but was disappointed. The only stall with places to sit to eat is at a udon stall. As such , there were many customers, q up for 30 minutes before we got our order. Seats were limited. A other stall selling hot food is a stall selling meat skewers and Okonomiyaki. The other food choice is cakes , bread, biscuits. No stalls selling hot coffee/ tea. It is a good place for locals to get their daily groceries but for tourists ,just a place to look, see , go take photos

The Kochi Sunday Market is a must if in the area. I altered my plans for a trip just to make sure I would be in Kochi on a Sunday. Prior to going, I read that the market has been going on for hundreds of years. It starts near the castle on a single road that stretches over a kilometer. I started early here, around 7:30 am and spent a couple hours here walking up and down looking at everything the vendors had to offer. For the most part the market was full of fresh produce. But there were other vendors here selling goods like knives, antiques, plants, etc. There were a few food vendors here as well, I tried the tempura sweet potatoes and went back for seconds, they were great! Markets, are a great way to immerse yourself in local cultures and the Kochi Market should not be missed.

For a couple years I used to live a few miles away from Kochi City, and once every month or two I'd ride the streetcar in to check out the Sunday market. There are fruits and vegetables for sale there, and woodcarvings, and many types of knives. Lots of stuff. I can't say I ever bought a whole lot except knives for souvenirs (I had a cheaper place to buy fresh fruit) but it is fun to check it all out, then maybe wander back through the long covered shopping street that runs parallel to the market street.

It might not be the most exciting thing in the whole world, but if you are from outside Japan and visiting Kochi City anyway, I feel it is a must-see while you are there. I think the market only happens one Sunday per month, though, if I remember right.

It was my luck that I stay at a hotel next to this market. It is like a few streets long, and they sell mainly food, mainly home made, plants/flowers, antiques ceramics, vegetables fresh from the gardens, gardening tools, famous knives and scissors from Kochi....and during my visit, it starts only around 7.00am though around 6.30am, some vendors already set up their booth. A market you should not miss if you are here during the Sundays, and please make sure you bring your basket or recycle bag or shopping bags, a lot of things to buy.

Quite a mix of vendors wih handicrafts, antiques and a wide assortment of goods (somewhat like an American swap meet) stretched out on the street two blocks parallel to the Obiyamachi covered shopping street.

Ok, we arrived in early afternoon (around 14h) when the market was closing down. Everything was closed by 15h!

However, we could still get an impression, and it really seemed like a pretty standard market. Nothing special.

Even on a rainy day this is a must. The long stretch of venders selling fresh produce, pickled vegetables to knives and other pottery items was a sight to see. We were there towards the end but still found it to be just as lively and interesting. Vendors were super friendly and accommodating. They even peeled and cut the fruits for us, as we wanted to eat it right away. To see the people, especially seniors, interact with each other and having a good time makes it more of a social event for them than work. It was a nice atmosphere, especially for the younger ones to see. Totally a fun place !

I love food, so of course this was a must. Had a great time wandering up and down the market (twice!) and trying all the local goodies. Some of my favorites were the sweet potato mochi (imo mochi), the yuzu drinks and the tomatoes. They may have been some of the best tomatoes I have ever tasted, apparently Kochi is famous for them. Close to Kochi Castle, so works for a nice walk.

I've spent a weekend in Kochi so, luckily, I was able to visit the famous Sunday Market. I would recommend you to come here early in the morning, so you can have breakfast at one of the many food stalls. The Market is located very close to other famous spots (Hirome Ichiba, Obiyamachi and Kochi Castle). You can also find many shops that sell traditional crafts, so it's a great spot for buying unique souvenirs.

If you are staying in Kochi and happen to be there for the sunday market, by all means take some time to see it, but it is not something I would recommend you make a trip to Kochi just to see. I love markets and enjoy seeing the local produce, and this market is mainly fruit and vegetables for the locals stretching a long way up the street. I did expect a bit more craft, and perhaps stalls selling food as there are obviously a reasonable number of tourists wandering around. There a couple of antique stalls at the castle end and some stalls selling plants and flowers, but that was it really. It was a very blustery day which was making life difficult for the stallholders and many were shutting early perhaps due to the conditions, so make your visit early.
