The flowers are always in bloom and you can feel the laid-back atmosphere of Okinawa, so my family always goes there.
It used to be empty and I was able to relax, but now that the facility is new, it has become crowded. I think there will be an increase in the number of overseas group tourists as it is reasonably priced.
There are also more behavioral exhibits, and you can see animals unique to Okinawa.
I think in a few years I'll be able to watch it more calmly.

My family has been here twice. Once for a normal zoo visit in June and another for their evening Christmas Lights Celebration in December. My daughter enjoyed her Birthday at the Zoo. Some of the paths are really steep. Not for the handicapped or really young. They had a wide variety of animals, especially the reptile house. If you are visiting in December I highly recommend the Christmas Lights Show. They had a winter wonderland, which is cool because you are on a tropical island. This family had a great time both times.

I love zoos. I make a point to visit one wherever I am around the world. This is by far the worst zoo I've ever visited. It appears to be short on animals, and those that are here don't appear to be well-kept. I saw at least one squirrel openly dying on a wood platform and a reptile of sorts completely dead underwater; seemed to have been dead for some time. I watched a zoo staff member 'give' a bear water by spraying it with water for about 3 minutes, most of which went against the bars that the bear feverishly licked. While viewing the one elephant in the pin, our group was asked to move along because a few people with a camera and a clapperboard said they were filming and needed to film a family walking at the zoo that was waiting at the end of the sidewalk to shoot the scene. I'm guessing they didn't want black folks in their recording. Lastly, I've never visited a zoo where there is an exhibit for chickens-- literal roosters and hens that many keep in their backyards. There was also a section for guinea pigs in case you've not seen those either. In fairness, the zoo does appear to be under reconstruction in many areas due to heavy equipment, open machinery and closed off sections throughout. I do not recommend this zoo and am hopeful that it can eventually earn the 2nd most popular thing to do rating because of it being an exciting place to be rather than having the most reviews.

I have never been to such a horribly unkept zoo with tiny exhibits !!!! It was 35deg no shade for 90% of animals !! I'm leaving her depressed and sad for these poor animals ! We saw no staff what so ever the whole time ! The water in most exhibits was sparse! It should be shut down for animal cruelty!!!!

I was debating between 1 - 2 stars because the interactive museum inside is a nice place for young children. At the end only one. The museum requires a significant surcharge making it an independent experience. The zoo deserves to be close for the terrible conditions the animal are kept. I’ve seen cleaner places on TV when they raid houses where the keep animals abused. Small cages, unclean.

I wish I could give 0 stars. This zoo was absolutely horrible. I love going to zoos for every place I travel to, so we were super excited for the elephant rides and other neat attractions they had listed. I went the week after Christmas because I was told the lights and fake snow area were to die for. The animals were clearly malnourished. The monkey's hair was so matted that I couldn't bear to look at them. Every single exhibit was dirty and looked like it had never been kept up. The reptile room (if you can even call it that) HAD A DEAD LIZARD BEING PASSED OFF AS ALIVE!! It took us a minute to notice the tiny pin holding the lizard to the tree. The best part about this zoo is the food at the beginning. Half of the exhibits were closed, and the other half were so bad, I left with a hurting heart. Do NOT go here unless you have papers to shut this place down. Plz don't support what these people are doing.

I witnessed 4 workers and two elephants at the Okinawa Zoo... I was up on a higher ledge looking down and the elephants and they kept looking up to see if anyone was watching.. they were taking a long wooden dowel and smacking the elephant in the foot and then would stand next to it and intimidate it by hitting the stick off their hand.. then the guy who was near the back with a wheel barrel cleaning up the poop walked to the side of elephant pulled something small out of his pocket and stuck it into the elephants back side.. the elephant let out an awful scream. A bunch of non compassionate people working with the elephants. I left the zoo very upset. I took several pictures and videos of the torture... hopefully who ever they work for see this and actual care about the welfare of the elephants. :(

Okinawa can learn from other countries on how to treat caged animals. It is pathetic to see the animals in a sad state...of course, that is not their natural habitat. The only part I like in this place is their science center and the area for feeding the fish.

This little zoo is tucked away in the middle of the town. It's smaller than American zoos, but bigger than I thought it would be. My husband and I took my sister and niece there while they were visiting us. Plenty of monkeys if your kids like monkeys, and a good amount/variety of other animals. I think it's about a $6 entrance fee and well worth it. We probably spent 3 hours there with a 2yr old.
