Winter cherry blossoms have begun to bloom in the strolling garden.
We visited by chartered taxi. Parking is free, and the entrance fee is 400 yen. This is the largest villa of the Ryukyu royal family, and was used for the royal family's recreation and for entertaining foreign envoys. It was built at the end of the 18th century, but was devastated in the war, rebuilt, and is now a World Heritage Site. The garden is a strolling garden, and includes a Chinese-style hexagonal pavilion, large and small arch bridges, and the winter cherry blossoms were starting to bloom, which was beautiful.

Well worth the very cheap entrance fee!
Wonderful, beautiful gardens. Well worth the very cheap entrance fee. Visit the baby koi pond near the back and feed the little ones. Also there is a separate pond off to the left side of the gardens that has all the less colorful carp. There is a carp food machine there. Make sure you feed them, they seem hungrier than the others.

    Hidden spot
I took a taxi from Shuri Castle. It took about ten minutes to get around. I walked slowly and spent my time. Even though it was August, it was a weekday, so tourists were sparse and slow. There are no coffee shops, so it is recommended to bring your own drink.

    Royal Family Garden
Included in our shore excursion and we had an amazing guide accompanying. We had a brief but interesting information session before we entered. The garden is typically Japanese, centered on a lake that is fed by an Ikutokusen (spring) and with a circuit pathway and dates to 1799. There are various monuments, gates, a pavilion, the 'UDUN" palace, stonework features including a bridge over the lake. The garden has abundant vegetation but no blooms.

    Gardens of the Ryukyu Dynasty
I visited with a friend on holiday. I've been to Shuri Castle many times, but this is my first time here. I felt that the path from the entrance to the garden was typical of Okinawa in the sense that it was like a dense tropical forest. The garden was quaint and quiet, and the scars of war were hard to believe in this place.

It costs 400¥ to enter, there’s a recommended route and it brings you pretty much around the whole garden (skipping some areas). Other than the pond area with the stone bridges, I found the rest of the forested area rather mundane. It’s quite rocky and may not be safe for kids to run around too.

The Ryukyu royal family's villa and Japanese (Chinese) style garden were wonderful. The wooden house is well maintained and you can take off your shoes to look around inside. The large garden was soothing with a wonderful view. It took about an hour to walk around and enjoy it. There is a large parking lot.

I visited Shikinaen Garden on a perfect sunny day in December. Entrance fee was cheap, I think it was ¥400. The garden is pretty large, with a palace, pond, trails, etc. It was fun to walk around the palace then venture onto the trails cutting across the pond. Everywhere you walk, there are amazing views. There are also places with benches and shade so visitors can relax and take their time. I got lucky, the day I went (might be daily, not sure) there was a half hour show with traditional sanshin music and dances. This was an incredible experience. I hope one day visitors can come and I can show them Shikinaen Garden.

This is not a flashy tourist attraction as Shuri Castle, or Kokusai-Dori Street in Naha City, but this is definitely the place to see and learn about Okinawa's unique and rich history and culture. As Japanese citizen, knowing Okinawa as the southern most territory of Japan, I've never had a chance to be exposed to such a rich history and culture of Okinawa, or "Ryukyu Kingdom" which survived the powers in-between Qin Dynasty and Satsuma Domain of Shimazu Clan under Shogunate Japan. The garden is the unique mixture from the elements of China, Japan, and Ryukyu. This is the"must-see" when you visit Okinawa. This Shina-en Garden is designated as World Heritage.

For a pleasant stoll in the park, you can not go wrong here. The grounds are well maintained and designed. Most of it is level but there are areas those with mobility issues need to avoid. The plants, buildings, ponds and streams made for a quiet, peaceful walk.

First off, I love gardens and hidden greenscapes I can visit. This gets the added benefit of being small enough to enjoy and having some history wrapped up into it. We loved it here. It was a real treat to walk amongst the Chinese buildings and the greenery while forgetting about the hub-bub of Naha. Please visit and enjoy.

I visited this garden because I was fooled by the "World Heritage Site" title. The garden is now a shadow of its former self. It isn't maintained properly, with mosquitoes hovering on the stale lake, and red ants on the steps of the stone bridges. Very disappointing.

This is a garden with nice landscape (can take some nice shot here). The path is rocky and makes me wonder how people used to walk on these paths (so please bring your best walking shoes and prepare for rocky path). The weather was kinda hot and sunny, so you may need an umbrella or apply some sunblock.

For me, the garden is still ok only and there is nothing special to see (maybe I have seen too much of gardens).

Frankly can't believe this is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Small, unremarkable, underwhelming. Waste of time. Serene and peaceful because nobody goes there.

This place is must visit if you're in okinawa, the garden of shikina en located on a small hill to the south of shuri castle in naha, there is a uniquely ryukyuan, stroll garden, and japanese & chinese design features has been acclaimed as uniquely Ryukyuan, this place is good for sightseeing, walking, very peaceful..just be aware that this place is quite deserted and bring mosquito repellent to be more safe!
