- travelerOrangeCounty183 contributionsTypical shopping areaThis place was huge and seemed to go on forever at points. There all sorts of side streets and continuing streets so bring your walking shoes. You have an outside street running north/south and then a few streets under semi cover for weather. Look for the fish market toward the middle of the main middle street. Very cool and you can buy your live lunch and have it cooked upstairs at one of the resturants. Quite an experience. Past that, shopping area.Visited September 2023Traveled soloWritten October 9, 2023
- CanuckJamesNishinomiya, Japan1,758 contributionsReally sanitized, tourist trap, expensivePost renovation, it has become the cleanest public market I've been to. The place lacks character. You can purchase the fresh seafood on the first floor then bring it up to the second floor and one of the restaurants will cook the seafood for you. Considering the total price vs the environs, it isn't a great deal.Visited November 2023Traveled with friendsWritten November 17, 2023

I really like what they did with Makishi Public Market. It's clean, organized, and has a lot of variety. The first floor is all market and the second floor is full of restaurants. You can even pick what you want on the first floor and have them cook it upstairs. They have a lot of fresh seafood here. I really feel bad for the coconut crabs they have in tiny containers. They are beautiful and unique animals that don't deserve it. There are a lot of Okinawan specific things here whether it be food or souvenirs.Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 15, 2023

We spent a couple of hours wandering the streets and trying different food. Picked up some t-shirts for $15 which is cheap.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 13, 2024

There were many rave about the seafood market so we went to try today but was very very disappointed. Beware of the shop at the centre lane the last shop nearer to the lift. (the shop assistant can speak Mandarin). Firstly the price is very expensive. The shop who sold us the seafood over charged us and is not honest and didn’t inform us clearly about the cooking fees. We had one fish (half raw half steam, one moonlight shellfish, one tiger prawn. The total cost add up to almost 8000 Yen (we were told the fish is 2000 yen, the shellfish is 2000 yen and the prawn is 600 yen) and when we are at the shop before going level 2 to wait for the food the shop assistant already added 500 yen (cooking fees). But when we finish our meal we were ask to pay 1100 yen for cooking fees again. When we question them the lady who speak Chinese denies. Do note that the cooking fees is 550 yen per person. Don’t get con by this shop. We are very turn off my this as we didn’t expect this to happen in japan. But these people who mend the store were Chinese from China so don’t expect honesty la. And the next worst experience here is my hubby request for extra wasabi... i saw the waiter pass the wasabi from the plate where the customer had left earlier to another waitress and she put it on the saucer and serve to my hubby! It’s very unhygienic! We totally loss appetite. The waiter who took the wasabi from left over plate also ate the left over food from the plate when he was clearing the table. Don’t come to this stall if you visit here! Try other store!

This is my second time visiting Makishi Public Market. The market we visited this time was said to have reopened in March 2023.
Even though it is being renovated, it is still a market, so it does not mean that it has been reborn as a beautiful shopping center.
The store is a three-story building. On the first floor, there are shops outside the building facing the shopping street and shops inside the building, and although it has been cleaned up, the atmosphere of the market remains the same. The second floor is a restaurant. There were shops lined up along the walls, and the center was a dining space.

I have been to the temporary market several times, but when I heard that this market had opened, I immediately went there. The interior has a spacious atmosphere due to the structure of the building. The restaurant area on the second floor can be easily accessed by using the escalator.

The new public market now has escalators.
As others have written, the whole building has a strong smell. I don't think other fish markets have that smell. What is it? The second floor also smells bad. I hope they improve it.
The smell was milder in the dining area on the second floor, so I ate some fried gurukun and shima rakkyo. It was very delicious.

I heard that the public market had been renovated, so I stopped by on my way home to buy some souvenirs. The shops inside didn't seem to have changed much, and although they were renovated for fireproofing etc., the atmosphere hadn't changed much, which was a relief. Unfortunately, I didn't have much time so I couldn't see the second floor.

This was my first time going there since it was renovated, and I think the old market had a better bustling atmosphere. However, it has been cleaned up, the roadside is wide and easy to walk on, and it feels cleaner.
On the second floor, there are many shops that will cook the fish you bought on the first floor, as well as restaurants where you can enjoy Okinawan cuisine. Prices are a bit high because they are tourist attractions. Still, you can make new discoveries, such as fish of different colors that you don't see on the main island, vegetables and fruits, and pig faces, so if you haven't been there before, it's worth going at least once.

This market was so much fun to walk through. I absolutely loved all the restaurants we went to, and I bought a few trinkets at some of the stands. It was very pretty to see all of the lights and the hustle and bustle going on. I also really loved the location because it was a five-minute walk from the monorail, and two minutes away from the downtown area. It was impressively sprawling, and since its in the city center, it is the easiest to get transportation from.

I went there alone for lunch and shopping. It has just been renovated, so it is beautiful, the streets are wide and easy to walk on, and it is clean. I have plan to visit Makishi public market, What is the price per kg for spiny lobster?
Written May 18, 2019
I have no idea. I am talking about eating lunch for sashimi.
For 1000 yen, you can get good and reasonable fresh sea food compared to back home.

I recommend to visit here and eat here. When you find any fish in the market, the first fool, you can cooked the fish at eat-in eat-in corner on the second floor. Person where you bought fish, he can arrange to eat-in corner.
I used to have clubs, shrimp and shell fish.

Hi, I just wanna to know is Pufferfish worth to try? Which store would you recommend? Price? Thank you !!
Written March 8, 2018
sorry, i can't say which stall is better, cause i only tried once.
I am so excited as it is my first time having pufferfish. (like a dream come true) They have various ways of serving it, sashimi, soup and etc.. Of coz, the recommended way is to have it Sashimi..
I will think it is good to try once in a lifetime. I really can't rate or judge the fuzu itself. Only can suggest to skip the Cooked Pufferfish as it really doesn't taste fabulous, or special

We would like to opt for buying some fresh sushi and eat it at the back of the market where travellers say there are allocated seats Can we but beer there to have with the sush?
Any other tips for snacking at the market? We don’t want to go to the upstairs restaurants

There is grocery store outside the market, just short walk away from the fishmongers. They will direct you to the place. No worries.

How does it compared to Taipei Fish Market. I am sure some of you guys have been to these 2 places including the one in Seoul as well. How does the Fish market in Taipei and the Makishi fish market in Okinawa compared in terms of quality, variety, prices and everything else? Thanks
Written April 30, 2017
In my opinion, the Makishi public market cannot be compared to the fish markets in Tokyo, Seoul, Taipei, or the other big cities of Asia. It is comparatively small, but located in a popular area. It will move to a new building in a new area in the near future and many of the businesses currently operating in Makishi are worried it will not attract as many tourists. I think if it were not located in its present location, many tourists would not visit. Remember that it is not only seafood in the market. If you are in the area, stop by and have a look.
Written April 30, 2017
For Sushi and Sashimi in the Makashi market area... which vendor prices are good and really fresh. I see prices from photos and videos but if anyone knows please share... it would be invaluable. We like...
Sea Urchins( I know in Hokkaido it might be better but it is still better than here in Nashville I am sure)
Scallops, Tuna (fatty ones too), Sweet shrimps and many others...
Good times to visit makashi market... and other suggestions?
Written January 16, 2017
There is another fish market in Naha (Tuna City) at the docks/port on the waterfront. It does not have as much fresh fish on display as the Makishi one, but it does not have as many tourists and is very reasonably priced. There are many small eateries there and an outdoor eating area. I think it's better for lunch than for dinner.

Can you remember the restaurant name you chose on the floor above the wet market?
Written December 19, 2016
restaurant name is in Japanese can't decipher - but there's a lot of blue color displayed with an ad about "gold premium" beer. just looking at a picture I took of the place
