For 1000 yen you do get a pretty decent platter of fresh seafood. Of course if you willing to splurge more you can order the sea urchin and the humongous shell clam. Yummy!

A good choice of fresh seafoods that can be served fresh or taking upstairs to be cooked at a minimal cost. Foods are not really expensive compared to that of eating at the restaurants. An alternative eating out place especially for north Americans.

Many stores and stalls selling absolutely everything that you can think of in this 'market'. Do explore further to the side streets because that's where all the hidden gems are. We found a small restaurant (can't locate it on the map) that offered Okinawan cuisine...More

Not a very big market. Lower floor sells fresh sea food and meat while the 2nd level has restaurants that will cook your freshly bought meat. A couple of restaurants seemed to offer mainly chinese stir fry dishes targetted at China customers. So you got...More

One of the cleanest markets Ive visited. The fish market is superb and the items bought can be cooked upstairs.

We like to visit the local markets when we travel, and this is no exception. Seafood markets are particularly a must-go, because I love seafood! Our first proper meal was at First Makishi Public Market. The entrance to the market is quite hidden, and initially...More

This 'market' is located in the heart of the Naha shopping belt. So if you are in the Kokusaidori area, you must make a stop at this market as well. They sell all kinds of snacks, souvenirs and food. Be sure to consult Trip Advisor...More

The market is not that big. You can buy the seafood and have them cook for 500yen per person. Nothing spectacular if you have been to other fish markets in Tokyo. The stalls outside the market are more interesting. But since you’ll be walking along...More

Hi, can I check is this t recommended to go to makishi public at evening time ~1830?
May 01, 2018|
Response fromKurt I|
Evening is ok as long as it's not too late. The market is a lot of different shops, restaurants and stores so some may close earlier than others. The big attraction of the fish market would be winding down by that time so maybe not too good for that.

we will be arriving in Naha and have only 1 day to tour Okinawa. We would like to see:Shuri Castle, Shuri Gate, the Pond , Kokusai Street, Makishi Public Market, the Pottery street, the new Okinawa museum and possibly a dance performance if there is one in afternoon and also the makeing of Ryukyu Bingate. We do not know if all this is possible or how these are located geographically. We are willing to use a private guide to and from the port and to tour these places. One guide sent us a...More

Which of the fresh seafood market is better? (5 Replies)
First Makishi Public Market or Tomariyumachi? We looking to try some sea urchins, sashimi and others... will be in Okinawa for 3 nights. Prices that are reasonable and yet fresh. Suggestions.

The two places aren't very far from each other, short 5-10 minute drive or taxi ride so no reason you couldn't look at both, they'll both have fresh seafood and reasonable prices but here's the difference. Tomariyumachi is on the docks and where they bring the fish into, hold the auctions but it's pretty much the only thing out there. Makishi Market is a mall type area with many other shops and restaurants off Kokusai dori in the middle of Naha. The fish market is big and has a good...More
