Traditional culture of Ishigaki

Interesting culture of Ishigaki shows on the wooden house style (typhoon proof with stones wall surrounded) small zoo attraction (golden monkey, eagle and water buffalo).

The village has a peaceful atmosphere. The must is the monkeys (very small ones). They are very cute. You can give them special food and they come and jump on you. You also find old houses and mangrove. We went a day while the weather was not so nice and we really enjoyed this time.

A great cultural insight, but I was there for the monkeys. Such an amazing experience! If you're keen to have 6 or 7 monkeys crawling all over you, this is where you MUST go!

Ishigaki Yaima Village has moved and rebuilt several traditional island houses in a lovely park setting on the coast near Kabira Bay. Homes of a fisherman, farmer, and merchant are represented. The houses are fully accessible and have traditional furniture and implements of the owners on display. There is a modest amount of signage in English. There is also monkey... More

This village is very interesting. We enjoyed visiting the different houses in the village depicting life many years ago on the island. Th small monkies (imported from Bolivia) were so cute and fun to photograph. They will actually eat out of your hands. The place itself is beautiful and tropical. However, the temperature is mild, as you are on the... More

This is very accessible by bus as there is a stop right outside. There was mochi pounding which was cool to see and even better to taste. There's many activities for children like calligraphy and straw braiding. I would definitely recommend it to families. The grounds are very well kept.

The Village is a bit hard to find, TA's directions take you to the Ishigaki Government building in the main town whereas the Village is actually on the road from the town to Kabira Bay in Nagura (enter '967-1 Nagura, Ishigaki,' in Google Maps to find it), there's no English signs to it but some large yellow Japanese flags/signs. The... More

We were told to not touch the monkeys, but no one told the monkeys. ha. They were all It sad to see the water buffalo being pulled by a ring in his nose round and round to make the grain. Poor animal. Other than that, we loved the village and the entertainment we were given by the performers.
