75% of the center is closed down because of the earth crack. There is hardly any mud left and the place wasn't really clean. Everywhere I met signs with keep out. It was very expensive compared to the other onsens I've tried. Normally there are lots of locals at the good places but here there were hardly any.

I went there by my self, not thinking much and just enjoying the relaxed feeling. Until I saw a guy walking by. I didn't know that the outdoor area is a mixed area. But the mud covered my whole body so it was still nice. Definitely will go there again.

So rather than a review I would like to offer some tips From Fukuoka it's a 1:40 trip via sonic ( try to get reserved tickets valid on JR pass ) to Beppu station Hoyoland has two types of onsens a milky sulphur smelling but wonderful indoor male / female and a outdoor mud ( mixed ) women can stay... It is old, decadent and somewhat filthy, but still an interesting experience, specially if you like mud and sulfur. The scenery and the facilities look more like a video game setting than a spa. The baths are arranged in a labyrinthine way, which is fun to explore. But move slowly because the floor is very slippery. The sign on the... More

I have been to many onsen inJapan, Hoyoland was the best for its been so natural and simple. Hope it doesn't get any renovation done, the way it's now seems like been in the Meiji era of Japan. The power of the natural hot spring plus the old building, make that place UNIQUE

If you want to experience a real beppu onsen, as well as a beppu mud bath, then this place is definetly worth a visit. It's quite seedy though, and the facilities are very, very aged. Also, while I loved the experience of mud between my toes, when you pick up a clump of mud from the bottom in your hands... More

We found out about Hoyo Land from our hostel. We found it by driving up from the city, though I think you can also get a bus there. The 1050yen price was reasonable seeing as mud bathing is quite a unique experience. It closes at 8pm, and we arrived just after 6pm. The man at the front desk explained clearly... More

Everybody is naked and 10 or 20 years ago that wasn't an issue. Now women hide and men try to get a glimpse of them naked. I loved the place and there are not that many places for mud bath. For those shy you can take a towel to cover you up when out of the water. When I was... More

The male employee of the Beppu mud bath (Hoyoland) comes into the womens' change room to look at the naked women. Here is my story. I was the only woman in the onsen at 6.45pm. I was cooling myself, sitting on the edge of the bath in the women's change room. I was completely naked with just my feet in... More
