About
The largest ropeway in Kyushu with a maximun riding capacity of 101 passengers ! I will guide you through the 10 minute journey to Tsurumi Sanjo Station situated at 1,300 maters above sea level. Standing 1,375m high, Mt.Tsurumi is located at the east edge of Aso-Kuju National Park. Mt.Tsurumi is an active volcano with fumarole activity still occurring in the backside, and is the source of Beppu Hot Spring. The top of Mt.Tsurumi offers a beautiful view of the Beppu Area, Mt. Yufu, the Kuju Moutains, and the Shikoku Regions.

Nice view.

We went up there with our baby in a carrier. It was 0 degree Celsius so it was slightly cold. However, we walked up to the top of the mountain so it was not hot at all. It’s worth our time.

Nice view of Beppu and Oita

Nice vantage point of beppu and oita, the view was spectacular and refreshing. The ticket price is reasonable and there is a coin locker for bags at the station.

It's worth a visit, and once at the top you can spend around an hour exploring the paved paths and climbing to the actual summit of the mountain. Although it is possible to buy a one way ticket, the walking route just follows the winding road. There is a walking path down the mountain but only for experts with proper kit. There are shops at the bottom and top selling drinks and very basic snacks. There is nowhere nearby for a proper lunch. Also note that they only accept cash for both the entrance and the shops.

Amazing views, very little walking at the top
Oct 2019
The journey up is superb and is only beaten by the quality of the views in all directions. We were blessed with a day with only light cloud which bounced off the adjacent mountains. We spent about an hour and a half at the top.

Amazing views
Oct 2019 • Couples
On a clear day absolutely worth the short bus trip or drive and cost, amazing views! Once you're there, there is an observation deck above the building and further walking tracks which take you to the very top of Mount Tsurumi. If you pop into a tourist information shop you might get a discount voucher, we did 100 yen off each.

Excellent view

Easy ride up. You will find a temple and some statues along a trail. It is a moderate climb to the top, but low hanging clouds can hamper the view.

Love the scenery

Take the bus from the beppu station. A direct bus will bring you there, just take note of the timing so that you dont miss the last bus back to beppu. Check with the bus captain if you are unsure of where to alight. The ropeway brings you up and you could see a fine stunning scenery which we were lucky as the sky was clear.

Amazing View
Oct 2018 • Couples
The view on the ropeway journey is amazing. As its Autumn, the trees are turning red and its a spectacular view from the cabin. There is a monitor inside the cabin that explains the scenery and surrounding in English. Once reached the top of the ropeway station, we took a hike up to the highest point of the mountain. The hike takes about 20 mins up. The view on the peak is awesome and beautiful. We had packed some lunch and had a little picnic at the top of the mountain. There are some benches that you can rest and enjoy the view. Lots of photo spots around the area.

Put on your most comfortable pair of shoes if you plan to visit this area. Take note of the bus timing and the Ropeways timing down as the bus schedule between runs is quite a long wait. Visit the tourist information counter located inside the shopping area at the Beppu station for a bus schedule if you plan to visit this place.

Steep ride up and great walks at the top
Sep 2018 • Family
Came here on a rainy morning with the kids (5&6). Initally skeptical about how much we could see as it was rainy and quite cloudy but the steep ride in the gondola (33 degrees and 38 minutes - for those of you who would like to know) was interesting. They had English information slides all the way up and down the mountain so it was also informative. At the top, there are multiple walks that are all paved so it was easy to get the kids active on the walk. The veiw from the highest point is well worth the steps and the kids managed to get up there in about 25 minutes. It might be fascinating to come back when it is colder (for snow) or when it clearer for better views.
