We came here for the Sand bath experience after reading the reviews. This place is relatively new and clean. It looks like it has been renovated and the baths are huge. There are many baths and pools, and they even have a steam bath.
We spent nearly 2 hrs here and we came after 7 thinking that they still have the after-hours admission rate. I think they have done away with the night rate and charge everyone the same ¥780 for admission, and ¥380 for yukata rental. Even paying the full price, i would still recommend this place, its well worth it.

Came here especially for sand bath experience. I didn’t perspire much but the warm sand felt comfortable on my back. It’s not easy to cover the sand by yourself but it’s doable.

There’s no drinking water in this place except from the vending machine. No amenities are provided so remember to bring your onsen towel, bath towel, shower cap, etc. Basic shampoo & bath soap are provided.

Onsen water was average, no smell and no softening effect on my skin.

Didn’t eat at the restaurant as it serves mainly steam food.

Ok to skip this except you want to experience sand bath.

Happy at this place, there are sand bath (self service) and onsen. The onsen fee 780 yen is separate from sand bath fee (380 yen), you have to buy towel or rent it at the counter.

I wanted to enjoy a sand bath without time pressure. Hyotan sand bath is a wonderful experience you can enjoy at your own pace. It is self-service so you must rent a yukata, and dig and cover yourself. It was very easy and I preferred to do in this way so I could control how much sand is on top of me. It was very warm and I enjoyed for about 25-30 minutes. The sand bath is mixed gender so you must rent the yukata and shortpants at the entrance for about 400 yen. After the sand bath i enjoyed the other onsen and had a delicicious lunch of steam crab.

We wanted to experience a hot sand bath and so glad we came to Hyotan Onsen and not the hot sand bath by the beach. It does look like it's recently renovated.

When you enter, put your shoes in the shoe locker. Then pay for your admission, hot sand bath, and towel rental from the ticket kiosk. You then trade the shoe locker key and your paid tickets for a locker key in the bath room and get your yukata, disposable underpants, and towel (you can bring your own towel if you prefer not to rent).

Change into the underpants and yukata in the gender-specific bath houses. The hot sand bath area is mixed gender, so you can do the hot sand bath with your partner or family. After being buried in the hot sand, the shower and hot springs were a wonderful experience.

The many hot spring onsens were very impressive. They have many different types of tubs in the onsen The shower area is huge and very clean and well maintained.

The very nice unexpected bonus was having lunch in the Jigoku Steam Kitchen. You order the meat and vegetable from the kiosk. Then you cook the food in an area that uses the steam from the hot springs. We got crab legs and vegetable mix and the crab was excellent! There is also a sit-down restaurant with traditional Japanese food.

Gyoten Hot Springs is a recently renewed bathing facility, which is suitable for everyone. It is located in Kannawa area, not far from Kannawa Mushiyu (Steam Bath). This time I didn’t use a sand bath, but if you like it, you can try it at a reasonable price. If you go to Beppu, don’t stay at hotel’s bathroom, but go outside and experience a public bath. I am sure that you love it.

My first time trying a paid Onsen. I went in the morning so it wasn’t crowded. There were 2 rotenburo (Lovely but one wasn’t very hot) and 7 indoor pools. Pleasant and I enjoyed myself. However, for the price (¥780) I was surprised that they provide very minimal amenities - Only shower gel, shampoo and rinse. I expect at least a body lotion at the dressing table.

We came a long way to visit this onsen. It took us time and money for nothing, it was closed. There was no notice on the website, nothing on the entrance. We came across some locals who were also disappointed and didn't know either why it was closed. With such a nice website and good reputation (Michelin), no closure notice is not acceptable.

We came all the way from Tokyo to try the famous three Michelin stars onsen and it turned out that we cannot use it due to construction work. The construction is going on since this year February but there's nothing on the website about it. Disappointing.

Hyotan Onsen, currently the public baths are under renovation, so only the private baths are available. 12 private baths, each JPY2150 per hour for up to 3 people. Very nice, the water is replaced after every use, and there is a steam room in the room !
