Suginoi Hotel has a very interesting and large onsen complex that includes segregated rotenburo onsens (Tanayu), and a mixed amusement-type onsen where you wear swimming suits (Aqua Garden) - all with panoramic views of Beppu Bay. We found that it could be a good place to start one's onsen experience if you are a couple and prefer to bath together without being naked in public. The onsen waters at Tanayu felt better and the pools with sunken loungers were pure bliss under the shimmering stars of the Beppu skies. We bought a ticket that admitted one to all the onsens and included a buffet lunch for 1500 yen each. The lunch room was full of Japanese families enjoying a leisurely buffet meal from a fairly wide variety of Japanese and the odd Italian food. After lunch, we took advantage of their free shuttle bus to Beppu Station for a walk around town before returning to Suginoi in the evening to soak in the onsens. It turned out to be a very nice and enjoyable day and was well worth the ticket price indeed.

On weekdays the bus leaves every 15 minutes until 3 pm on the hour and so forth and then every half hour. On week ends, it leaves every 15 mins. You cannot miss the purple mini bus in the car park, from the West side exit. Each bus seats around 25 people. Journey time if no traffic, 7 minutes! Cab back 1180 yen roughly if you stay later than 9 pm, which is the last free shuttle back to the station. It does not open until 2 pm. First laser light show is at 7 pm.
Upon arrival, if you want dinner too, it is a bit cheaper to buy the dinner plus baths entry in one ticket. You can use both, the Tanayu, naked section, gender separated and the Aqua Garden, bathing suits needed for the 1500 entrance fee. I bought 2 entrances and 2 dinner buffets and the total cost was 11800 yen. You do not have to use the naked section, it is optional.
Take your shoes off in the locker room and exchange for a pair of slippers. Then you get your big towel and the little green one. Head up to the third floor. This is where you separate for the separate changing rooms. A hint, women follow the red/ orange flags, men, the green ones. There are no English signs coming out of the the change rooms for the Aqua Garden section, so this will be important to remember the colours of the flags/ hanging down bits of fabric. Find yourself a locker and put the armband key thingy on. Strip off. Shower first before entering the pools. Do not stand, except for the two standing showers immediately to your right upon entering the women's naked bit. Obviously, don't know where it was for the male section!
Free drinking water is available, plus scales so you can compare before and after! The shampoo, body wash and conditioner have a great lemon smell, mmmmmmm.
Do not put the green towel in the water. Most ladies fold it and put it on their head. There are about 8 different pools and a saun and outside showers. Sit and enjoy. No Powerful massage jets or waterfall massager.
In the powder room there is moisturizer, cleanser, cotton wool pads and a hairdryer.
Now for the important part. You do not need to get dressed again to get to the Aqua Garden. Put your swim suit or bikini on and head past the desk on your left go through the fabric things and go down the lonf flight of steps. You will pass the men's green flag changing room. It will be on your left. It is fine to walk down in bare feet. At the bottom, the floor is heated. Do not make the mistake, like my husband did of getting dressed again and heading for the exit sign. He was not allowed back in to find me as I was already in the Aqua Garden, but after an hour's frustrating explanation he was allowed to look for me and we enjoyed the Aqua Garden, where there are more pools with great mountainside views and a salt floating dome. Here you will find two waterfall massagers, some bubbling areas and the showers with the really hard pressure. We went on a drizzling weekday and it was really empty! After 3 pm, hotel guests are allowed to use the facility and that is when it starts to get busy. Hotel guests have the green kimono.
Now for the dinner.
No foie gras, as a previous reviewer mentioned, which was the thing I was looking forward to the most. You cross the road and go into the Suginoi Hall which is as unatmospheric as the name suggests. It is for feeding the hordes and you may have to share a table at busy times. Head for the brightly lit Christmas decorations. For the price, it is good value, better than you get down town. The snow crab legs are massive! The steak is juicy. Three flavours of Haagen Daz ice cream, cute little desserts, unlimited soft drinks and tea. There is an alcoholics anonymous dream package with a catch. For 90 mins you can drink as much as you want for 1800 yen! Lychees, oranges, pineapple, different pasta, bread, noodles, rice, seafood stew, chinese stir fry dishes, sushi, sashimi, salad bar. Both occidental and oriental tastes catered for. Food starts being cleared by 9.15pm.

Glorious views from the 5-tiered open-air baths. You could easily soak here for an hour (I did).
You can take a free shuttle from the west exit of Beppu Station to the baths at Suginoi Hotel. You don’t need to be a staying guest, but if you aren’t it will cost a bit for admission, which includes towels and entrance to both the main baths and Aqua Garden, which is kind of like a hot spring water park. Aqua Garden is family friendly and mixed-sex so bathing suits are required.

Suginoi Palace is an onsen hotel in Beppu. They run a free shuttle service from Beppu JR station to the hotel. Wanted to try the onsen experience but am a little uncomfortable with the nudity aspect of it, so went to Aqua Garden since they allow bathing suits.
Aqua Garden is like a swimming pool that uses warm water. It is situated on a hillside that overlooks Beppu city and the coastline below. There are different sections where you can try out water features like jet massage, jacuzzi, and an indoor, domed pool where you float and relax, among others.
At night, they do a fountain show with colourful lights, lasers, water jets, images projected onto water screen, with music. I thought the show was underwhelming.
Towels and lockers are included with the price. You can also visit the their open air hot spring bath (no clothes allowed) with the same ticket. Overall I felt this was a unique attraction.

been in this place twice. go to the gender separated onsen area. Beautiful views over the bay and the city.
if you are in Beppu its a fun place to visit. Bus from train station goes directly to the hotel. Don't need taxi.

Huge, modern facility overlooking Beppu. Star attraction is of course the Tanoyu or Shelf Onsen that overlooks Beppu. There are also other facilities like shops and F&B outlet, and a water garden with scheduled shows that kids would enjoy. (Swimgear required in the water garden)
To be honest, the view from Tanoyu isn't as stunning as what you might get in Hakodate or Nagasaki, as Beppu is quite low rising and small. But still it has a very pleasant relaxing ambience. Suginoi itself is also very tourist oriented. When I went, there were various foreigner staff, including Westerners. Language wouldn't be an issue.
Transportation though, needs some attention. If you're using the shuttle service, be sure to ask some staff for help. There are at least two pickup points with different timings at the complex itself. From Beppu station, exit via the West Gate (西口). The collection point is immediately to the right in a small car park atop a low knoll. Shuttle service ends around 9 in the evening, I believe.

AQUA BEAT, the indoor water park has closed down! The website has not been changed. We were greeted by Christmas decorations. The Aqua Garden doesn't open until 2PM and we arrived in the morning, so cut our losses and left.

I was at the hotel for the buffet dinner and light show on grounds of the hotel. Wonderful staff food was well prepared and quite the variety. The beautiful light display was better than any christmas light I have seen here in the states

By hotel guest, this is the place for shopping, gaming, onsen and swimming. For visitors, this is also an excellent place to spend half day enjoying the perfect facilities of the hotel

Read about this resort and decided to book rooms and stayed in the whole day to enjoy the facilities. Definitely a right decision instead of taking their free shuttle bus to town. This resort is expensive so stay in and enjoy. Advisable to pay more to stay in the nicer hanakan block instead of the older honkan block. You get to dine in the Cecada restaurant instead of normal function room. This is a theme restaurant with world dining concept. It's like entering the Main Street of Disney land. Lots of fun for the whole family. The resort is huge. The outdoor Aqua garden swimming pools are heated. The rooftop onsen is beautiful esp the outdoor one. Saw a cosmopolitan mix of service staff so no problem with English. Also a big game arcade for the young. Only disappointment is the toiletries provided in the onsen. Very poor quality for an expensive onsen hotel. No Pola or Shiseido. Some drugstore quality type.
