Nice onsen facilities
Nov 2018 • Family
Visited the onsen facility of the Suginoi resort, which is named Tanayu. Nice rooftop pools with lovely views of Beppu and the bay. There is also an Aqua Garden on the top floor with a few heated pools, which is mixed gender and requires swimsuits. A nice saltwater relaxation chamber is located in Aqua Garden, where children are not allowed. The facility is open all year round, which is a plus.

If you don't want to stay in the hotel then do visit the onsen and Aqua Gardens and Aqua Splash area which are good and worth the trip.

Huge Integrated Resort
Mar 2018 • Family
So, we decided to stay here because my parents stayed at this hotel 40 years ago and it was their 45th wedding anniversary. I was expecting it to be really old but they did a good job maintaining the place and expanding it.
Suginoi Palace was so big that there were shuttle buses from one wing to the other if you didn't feel like walking. There were a variety of activities for families: shopping, swimming, onsen, bowling, arcade game centre and restaurants. The room was nice and comfortable with a nice view. I enjoyed my time there although usually I prefer smaller hotels.

An excellent place for fun and entertainment
Jul 2018 • Family
By hotel guest, this is the place for shopping, gaming, onsen and swimming. For visitors, this is also an excellent place to spend half day enjoying the perfect facilities of the hotel

Bring a swimsuit if you want to go to Aqua Garden too
Apr 2018 • Solo
Glorious views from the 5-tiered open-air baths. You could easily soak here for an hour (I did).
You can take a free shuttle from the west exit of Beppu Station to the baths at Suginoi Hotel. You don’t need to be a staying guest, but if you aren’t it will cost a bit for admission, which includes towels and entrance to both the main baths and Aqua Garden, which is kind of like a hot spring water park. Aqua Garden is family friendly and mixed-sex so bathing suits are required.

Great value and fun for onsen experience
Oct 2017 • Couples
We enjoyed our stay at this hotel in Beppu very much. Yes, it is huge and very theme park-like but it also does an outstanding job in everything. Service was wonderful everywhere. It is located about 20 minutes from the Beppu train/bus station but the hotel runs shuttles to/from the hotel every 30 minutes all day so it was very convenient and nice to have the views from a quiet location. Know where to get off - the shuttle stops at both towers entrances with separate check ins.

Our room was Western in the Hana-Kan Tower (I believe this was the newer tower than Hon-Kan. The nicest (and priciest) rooms seem to be in the middle between the two towers) and a bit small but adequate. It was small due to the fact that the room had both a queen and double beds plus a sofa! We should have specified twin beds and maybe the room would have felt larger. The bathroom was tiny but came with the wonderful Japanese bidet-toilet. We never used the shower since we bathed in the onsens. No closets so have to hang clothes on hangers. The rooms provided yukatas in three sizes (SML) and sterilized slippers. Everyone wore these everywhere - to meals, to the onsens, walking around the hotel. The tiny tots in their tiny yukatas were very cute!

The best part of Suginoi is the famous onsen - Tanayu. It has multiple indoor and outdoor pools plus a sauna - all with wonderful views overlooking the city of Beppu. The changing and washing areas are roomy and very well stocked. The onsens are gender separated. There is also a large mixed gender pool where most of the families with children seemed headed. The pool requires swim suits. We did not go to the pool. There is another onsen in Hon-Kan Tower that was smaller but also much less crowded.

Meals when staying in Hana-Kan are at the giant buffet Cedea Palace Restaurant, next to the entrance to Tanayu. The buffet has stations of world cuisine - Japanese, Italian, Chinese, Western, etc. The option to order sushi, sashimi, king crab legs, drinks, etc. were explained and very reasonable in price. Both breakfast and dinner choices were almost too much to choose from. Please remember that these are buffet meals in a very large hotel so it may not be to everyone's liking. We quickly learned to pick and choose and had very satisfying meals. I believe that those staying in Hon-Kan eat at the Seeds Restaurant Buffet.

While this stay can not compare to staying in a traditional ryokan with kaiseki meals in a private dining room, Tanayu and the price made this brief stay very enjoyable for us! It was a great first experience to start our two week tour of Kyushu and it’s onsens.

Is there such a thing as a BAD Ansen???
Jan 2017
Invite peace. Invite tranquility. Invite the very atmosphere that stops time. This is virtually every ansen I have attended in my two years of living in Japan. This particular ansen in Beppu is a personal favorite.

Lovely Onsen Resort
Apr 2017 • Friends
We enjoyed this place very much and felt that it's truly value for money. Love the multi-tiered onsen and the lovely sunrise! Get an ocean view room to enjoy the sunrise from your private room! Do not really like the outdoor onsen as it's like a swimming pool and so crowded.

We also enjoyed the dinner. Felt like we travelled around the world in the dining place. It's huge. And there's live performance. Very nice!

Nice Onsen Resorts
Apr 2017 • Friends
Read a lot of review on this resort, good and bad side. This is the most expensive stay at my entire trip. It comes with breakfast and dinner, public Indoor and outdoor onsen, Private onsen and lots more to explore. It is great with one night stay. If you don't have time you can also pay to enjoy the facilities. I had my best sunrise view from my room. The sunrise is amazing.

Wacky resort provides lots of fun
Dec 2016 • Family
Read about this resort and decided to book rooms and stayed in the whole day to enjoy the facilities. Definitely a right decision instead of taking their free shuttle bus to town. This resort is expensive so stay in and enjoy. Advisable to pay more to stay in the nicer hanakan block instead of the older honkan block. You get to dine in the Cecada restaurant instead of normal function room. This is a theme restaurant with world dining concept. It's like entering the Main Street of Disney land. Lots of fun for the whole family. The resort is huge. The outdoor Aqua garden swimming pools are heated. The rooftop onsen is beautiful esp the outdoor one. Saw a cosmopolitan mix of service staff so no problem with English. Also a big game arcade for the young. Only disappointment is the toiletries provided in the onsen. Very poor quality for an expensive onsen hotel. No Pola or Shiseido. Some drugstore quality type.
