I meant to pop in here for a few minutes on my way to Heiwadai Park and I never actually made it to the park! I spent over three hours here using the English language audio guide for all the exhibit areas, walking the paths and then there were still the four traditional Japanese style homes re-assembled on the property to look at. The staff were super helpful. They really should charge admission or accept donations or something. This place, combined with Miyazaki Shrine and a meal along Tachibana-dori makes for a great outing in Miyazaki City!

The museum is often overlooked because it is not a very conspicuous building and located to the north of Miyazaki Shrine. However, it is a must-visit spot.
The museum, which brings together the nature, culture and climate of Miyazaki Prefecture, offers a wide range of content. The exhibition method is typical same as other museums and is not eccentric, but it is still ingeniously arranged without being boring. There is a charge for special exhibitions, but the permanent exhibition is free.
Some of the footage is not very interesting as it is cheaply made. Most of the exhibits are explained in Japanese only, which is a drawback. It is recommended that an explanation in foreign languages be added for the benefit of foreign visitors.
In addition to fossil specimens and stuffed large animals, there are also workshops for children. They may be very pleased.

Interesting (but small) museum with very well designed exhibits (e.g. the animal dioramas... especially the deer one: when you get upstairs to the history section, look to see what the early hunters are aiming their spears at!).

For a foreign visitor, it was great to learn about regular Japanese life in the past... most of what we see in the west involves Samurai, Emperors and ninjas, so it was very educational and valuable to see what the "normal" people do and did. 20th Century history section was also very interesting to see from a different perspective.

It obviously helps if you can read Japanese as all of the exhibit explanations are in Japanese, but the staff on the front desk were lovely and helpful, and dug out an English overview guide for this struggling gaijin.

Four preserved traditional buildings (approx. 200 years old) outside to view as well, and also located right next to the Miyazaki Jingu shrines.

The Prefecture museum is a model of its type and specialises in the geological and animal life of the province. The friendly staff at the reception hand out a comprehensive guide in English but the explanations on the exhibits themselves are clear. There is a presentation on volcanic activity aimed at children but I found it informative even if it was in Japanese. Well worth spending an hour there.

This museum has many interesting exhibits related to animals and plant life, as well as the history and folklore of Miyazaki Prefecture. I was impressed with how carefully the exhibits have been prepared. The museum is in impeccable condition. Ask for an English-language handout (free) if you can't read Japanese. Coin lockers are available upstairs for storing valuables or other belongings while touring the museum. Behind the museum is a nice collection of old farmhouses and homes assembled here from various parts of the prefecture.
