We walking from Aoshima beach to Island. You can see a lot of natural rock everywhere. The rock is interesting & particular. There’s no car can enter to this island. You must park your car in the parking area before go.
The Aoshima Island is a must see for first time visitors. The small island is surrounded by natural rock formations known as “devil’s washboard”. When you walk across the bridge to the island, you can choose to follow the round the island path on either...More
The volcanic rock formations are unusual, in a similar vein to the Giants Causeway in Antrim in Ireland. The shrine on the island nothing special. However the wooden train that leaves from Miyazaki is worth booking and taking.
It was a cold but wonderfully sunny Christmas Day when we visited which made it just perfect. We loved the ambience in the temple and really liked wandering across the fascinating rock formations, the devil's washboard. We took countless photos of the red torii gate...More
we walked here to take a look at the shrine on the island but found that the real draw was actually the "devil's washboard" surrounding the island!
we woke up really early to catch the sunrise and it was a great and interesting view.
A nice walk on a clear day across the bridge to the island. Have a close-up look at what the locals call "The Devil's Washboard" along the way. The island is a quiet stroll through nature unless you are part of a large tour group.
Visited during China Golden week, via Royal Caribbean cruise, we booked a private taxi to avoid the mass tourist trips. The is a lovely peaceful location a small beach strip with black sand and incredible stone formations in the sea, walk to the bottom over...More
The drive along the Nicheman coast afforded amazing views of the Pacific Ocean before we reached Aoshima. The walk from here across the bridge to the Island was relaxed and enjoyable. The view of the ground level rock formations formed by nature on either side...More

You have the wrong Aoshima Island against the question if the Guardian story is correct. Aoshima Island that you have picked of is the one in Miyazaki prefecture. Been there, it has a shrine and a nice walk but not a lot of cats being a cat lover I would have noted. The Guardian puts the cat island of Aoshima in Ehime prefecture. Put Aoshima Ehime in Google, tap on map then zoom out and the island is in the sea of Japan. Put Miyazaki Aoshima into google maps and pull out and that's the one you have.
Question is does Tripadvisor have anything on the cat island ?. hmmm
