We were only spending a night in Kumamoto. After a visit to the castle. This is a good place to keep warm and have a drink or bite.

The shops are average as most reviews mentioned. Go to the intersecting side streets for food choices. There are more interesting options and range for yakitori and BBQ. We didn't go for raw horse meat but BBQ.

However they seem to close late. We left at 9pm. In Nagasaki, a similar covered walkway closed at 8pm.

As for souvenir shops, JR station has more interesting options.

No different to the arcades present in most Japanese cities, but still mostly free of the hordes of suitcase-toting tourists from a particular region, who are intent on cleaning out the shelves of every shop that offers tax free service. If you want to do your shopping in peace and feel like you're in Japan, this is still a safe bet.

I have stayed in Kumamoto for two nights and I found there are restaurants open till very late of the night. You won't need to worry about what to eat even at night time. There are also shops that open till midnight. There are some variety of food for you to choose.

There are several stores with tax-free signs and lots of restaurants making it perfect place to just walk around and casually shop and eat. Also, because of the roof, it is good alternative to sightseeing when it is raining... which is what took me there when I was in Kumamoto.

This happened to be beside our hotel but I wouldn't travel to shop here. Many of the shops were closed inside and there wasn't a lot of variety of shops.

It's a good place to eat & shop especially in wet season while you are in Kumamoto.
However, don't compare the walking streets in Tokyo, Osaka, etc.

This Shotengai is rather small and nothing compared to other larger ones in major cities. Would not return.

This street is besides the hotel we are staying so easily accessible. It is also near the castle so everything within this shopping area.
There was local fashion, souvenirs, snacks, restaurants within the shopping street.
We bought some japanese products from a shop gere, had sukiyaki dinner in one of the restaurant near one of the entrance. The food was very small portion and did not taste good. It was also very expensive at 3500 yen per pax. Pretty pathetic as I could count the strain of vegetable.
Other than this bad experience, the shopping street is very interesting.
There are many souvenir to bring home but do remember made in Japan products are what we look for. Many shopkeepers will emphasize to you that the crafts, textile, etc are made in Japan.
There are many bigger shopping malls nearby.

Shimotori is the main shopping street/mall in Kumamoto. You will find practically anything you wish to buy, some really good stores are on the narrow streets that cross it. There are plenty of restaurants there, however the best ones are on Kamitori ( this is the mall right at the end when you cross Denshadori ( tram street ).

Two long galleries with mainly shops and some eateries. Divided by a major road and some minor ones.
