We visited a number of shopping streets in Kyushu and this must be the busiest. A wide and long walking street where shops were located at both side of the alley. There were small little alleys that would lead to some local restaurants and eateries as well. The family had fun shopping here where managed to find the popular Japanese pharmacy, don don donki, some street food and even a shop selling local porcelain kitchen ware and wooden kitchen items, all made in Japan. There were some common fast food restaurant like McDonald’s and Starbucks located along this street too. I even managed to find a good taiyaki snack bar here which tasted awesome, crispy on the outside. I would say one would need to allocate at least two hours for shopping here.

Together with the Kamitori the 2 streets are important shopping arcades and easily accessible. It is a near the castle, a good 15 mins walk away.
Shopping here is very similar to most Japanese Archade/shopping street. There are local fashion shops, souvenirs, snacks, restaurants under “One Roof”. . About 500 meters long and fully roof covered. Loaded with big and smaller shops of all kinds on both sides along the way. Especially in this shopping street the amount of light coming in through the roof was noticeable. At the end of the arcade one turns right and continue into the Shinshigai arcade, another shopping street!
Quite lively area with many activities here there are discount pharmacies, cosmetics, souvenirs and electronics shops along the street. Few restaurants including the usual tourist places of KFC and McDonalds, and local Dotour. There are also shops selling Castella, the Portuguese sponge cake , a Nagasaki specialty
Besides, there are also sushi bars, izakaya, ramen shops and Japanese-styled restaurants too. We shopped and enjoyed ourselves!.

It's a bustling arcade day and night. There are various restaurants, karaoke shops, drug stores, and even a Don Quijote. The streets are very wide, so it's easy to walk. If you're visiting Kumamoto for the first time, it might be a good idea to use Shimo-dori as your base to find places to eat.

We were only spending a night in Kumamoto. After a visit to the castle. This is a good place to keep warm and have a drink or bite.
The shops are average as most reviews mentioned. Go to the intersecting side streets for food choices. There are more interesting options and range for yakitori and BBQ. We didn't go for raw horse meat but BBQ.
However they seem to close late. We left at 9pm. In Nagasaki, a similar covered walkway closed at 8pm.
As for souvenir shops, JR station has more interesting options.

No different to the arcades present in most Japanese cities, but still mostly free of the hordes of suitcase-toting tourists from a particular region, who are intent on cleaning out the shelves of every shop that offers tax free service. If you want to do your shopping in peace and feel like you're in Japan, this is still a safe bet.

I have stayed in Kumamoto for two nights and I found there are restaurants open till very late of the night. You won't need to worry about what to eat even at night time. There are also shops that open till midnight. There are some variety of food for you to choose.

면세를 내 건 드럭스토어나 상점들이 꽤 보이고 어느정도 알려져있는 음식점들도 가까이에 있어서 쇼핑과 식사를 해결하기에 좋은 곳입니다. 제가 간 날은 비가 왔는데 사진에 나오는 것처럼 위에 지붕이 있어서 쿠마모토 성이나 다른 계획이 있지만 날씨가 안좋은 경우의 대체로도 훌륭합니다.
There are several stores with tax-free signs and lots of restaurants making it perfect place to just walk around and casually shop and eat. Also, because of the roof, it is good alternative to sightseeing when it is raining... which is what took me there when I was in Kumamoto.

This happened to be beside our hotel but I wouldn't travel to shop here. Many of the shops were closed inside and there wasn't a lot of variety of shops.

It's a good place to eat & shop especially in wet season while you are in Kumamoto.
However, don't compare the walking streets in Tokyo, Osaka, etc.

This Shotengai is rather small and nothing compared to other larger ones in major cities. Would not return.

How far is it from the Cruise ship port.
