If you know the story of The Last Samurai or Samurai X this place is actually interesting place because the Satsuma Rebellion occurred in this place in the beginning of Meiji Era, this place is the last place in Kumamoto where the rebels defended from the Government attack before they ran away to Kagoshima. Visit the Museum also for better understanding of the History.

If you love history as I do this is a place you must visit. The park and museum sits on a ridge where the Kyushu rebel forces waited for the newly established Imperial forces who were on their way to reinforce Kumamoto castle. The ensuing battle was disastrous for the rebels who were ill prepared for the winter weather and military firepower of the imperial army. The museum is small but has some great displays. Just being there looking down the valley gave me goosebumps, imagining what happened here in 1877.
