I spent 6 months in Kumamoto and they were just perfect. I passed by the shrine every day from work and it is beyond beautiful!

One of the main points to visit in Kumamoto. Despite damages by the earthquake, one can get impression about the size and beauty of the castle, nice view from there.

Great view of castle from here as it is within the compound. The building seems new and no real distinction or character. The only outstanding point was the statue of the horse. The samurai and retainers must have come here to pray thanks for their...More

Nothing special about the shrine but, this shrine is the closest place where you can see the repaired main building of Kumamoto Castle, most of the castle area is still closed.

The shrine is all about the great castle view. Nothing special on the shrine itself, but privileged outpost. One can see well the dimension of this giant of a castle, even though it will be covered with scaffolding for post-earthquake repair work for the next...More

Located inside Kumamoto castle compound. It is not an elaborate huge shrine, but a normal looking shrine. Due to its proximity to the castle towers, it is the perfect location if you want a closed up photo of the towers.

While the shrine itself is nothing special there is a perk to this place. It offers a great view of the castle, especially now that you cannot get to the castle due to reconstruction.

Since the castle is not accessible, this is the only good place to see the castle for now. People from the bottom, when they see the closed sign, some of them turn around. But you can still enjoy the rest of area, including this shrine,...More

He was a famous war lord. A nice shrine close to the main building of Kumamoto Castle. This shrine is across the moat so you can see some of the damaged areas around the castle from the Kato Shrine.

Place is basically a shrine to Japanese soldiers. A tent was set up when we were there, presumably ready for a big ceremony.
