This shrine, located in the premises of Kumamoto Castle, is dedicated to Kato Kiyomasa, a beloved hero of Kumamoto. But the foundation of this shrine is relatively new and it only dates back to Meiji Time. From this shrine, you can enjoy a wonderful view of the castle tower.

This shrine is quite a walk from the tram station but it's worth a visit for a nearer view of Kumamoto castle.

I spent 6 months in Kumamoto and they were just perfect. I passed by the shrine every day from work and it is beyond beautiful!

One of the main points to visit in Kumamoto. Despite damages by the earthquake, one can get impression about the size and beauty of the castle, nice view from there.

Great view of castle from here as it is within the compound. The building seems new and no real distinction or character. The only outstanding point was the statue of the horse. The samurai and retainers must have come here to pray thanks for their stead’s that led them into battles faithfully. The horse statue emitted a sense of power, solidity and pride. I suppose that the horses had to powerful to take the weight of the armour that the samurai wore as they always had to be lifted onto their horses by the retainers.

Nothing special about the shrine but, this shrine is the closest place where you can see the repaired main building of Kumamoto Castle, most of the castle area is still closed.

The shrine is all about the great castle view. Nothing special on the shrine itself, but privileged outpost. One can see well the dimension of this giant of a castle, even though it will be covered with scaffolding for post-earthquake repair work for the next couple of decades. In addition to this, there is a lovely Kumamon-themed Daruma (who would have thought?) and a very cool goshuin for the shrine (with no Kumamon nor bears, but strangely, a tiger!)

Located inside Kumamoto castle compound. It is not an elaborate huge shrine, but a normal looking shrine.

Due to its proximity to the castle towers, it is the perfect location if you want a closed up photo of the towers.

While the shrine itself is nothing special there is a perk to this place. It offers a great view of the castle, especially now that you cannot get to the castle due to reconstruction.
