Our second visit to Kumamoto took us further afield than the standard tourist stops around the castle.

Honmyo-ji, nevertheless, is very much connected to the castle.

It is all about stairs. From the tram stop to the temple, the walk uphill was fairly easy though longer than we anticipated. After leaving the residential area you eventually reach a flight of steps with a huge gate looming above. Go up those stairs and proceed uphill to another longer, steeper set of steps and then another. There are small temples lining the roads but they are not the target. Cats follow you and there are street signs about the cats.

Then more stairs, this time with an older set of perhaps original very uneven and rough stone steps running down the middle with hundred and hundreds of lanterns of all shapes and sizes. Photo ops abound.

When we achieved the top we knew we wouldn’t be able to see the castle across town and on the same level as the temple. The day was grey and there wasn’t a chance. We didn’t climb the final sets of stairs to the grave and statue of Kato Kiyomasa, the builder of Kumamoto castle. The story behind him and his family is rather interesting and should be researched if you plan to venture to this temple.

We visited in late November, but the leaves had not yet turned. We were pleasantly surprised, however, to see one blossom on a winter flowering sakura in front of the Hondo. The flower was pointed out to us by a group of 3 women, the only other visitors to the temple whilst we were there.

When we visited there were literally only two other men and two cats. The four didn't belong to the same group.

The temple can be reached walking from the tram stop. Weather was good so we didn't mind the slope and hundreds of steps. The reward is a great view. Next to the toilets is an opportunity to see Kumamoto Castle and recognise that the temple is on exactly the same elevation.

Going on the left around the temple you reach another 300+ steps to the statue and viewpoint. Great view over Kumamoto on any day. With clear sky the mountain range must be impressive. Was misty when we visited though.

A hidden gem which, seemed to be well off the beaten track. Some damage done, unsure if that was due to last year's earthquake but, the temple buildings are magical and had an air of mystery and intrigue.
Two disinterested sales people in the temple shop (probably due to very low number of visitors). They had, had a character bypass but, didn't spoil the visit.
The older building is sealed off but still, easily viewed and enjoyed.
The perfect place for a bento lunch and quiet reflection on life.

The temple itself is ok but nothing special apart from the first double flight of stairs with the stone lanterns in the middle wich is quite impressive. The best part is behind the temple, a much longer flight of stairs leading to a panorama worth the effort .
