The ferry is very reasonably priced at JPY150 and is in operation 24 hours a day crossing approximately every 30 minutes. Some of the ferries are newer and have children's play rooms and modern amenities but they are still a great mode of transport. There is a snack bar on board and comfortable chairs for viewing the scenery.

They are running 24 hours though the frequency changes. If you stay near the port, Seeing the night view might be fun. if you have one day city bus tour ticket ( that of Kagoshima city(US$6) and of Iwasaki Corp (US$5) are available) you can buy one way ferry ticket at US$1.30 instead of US$1.70

You can take the normal ferry (160 yen single way), or there is also an extended ferry that do like a mini-cruise to view the island from the sea. This extended ferry cost 500 yen and is really worth it. There is one such extended mini-cruise at 11:05 (I don't know if there are other during the day - maybe... More

if you have a spare couple of hours, it is the perfect break to take the ferry across to Mt Sakurajima. The ferry service is every 15 minutes and inexpensive.

Travel time is about 15 to 20 minutes till reaching Sakurajima. You have a nice view on Kagoshima and Sakurajima when on the sea. Price for car is also not that high.

Very nice ferry ride experience. It is just a short ride about 15mins. The scenery was nice and the ferry came frequently and on time.

Great experience for driving car for the ferry trip. But it was a long queue that weekend, it took about an hour to wait before we could landed on board the ferry. Returing was smoother. Overall the ferry trip was great !

We took our car to Sakurajima and it was worth having. This ferry was very easy to access and use! You pay when you arrive at Sakurajima, so there is really no fuss at all.

The ferry takes you (and your car) to the opposite side of the water. As it is in Japan, it does it effectively and precisely. Just what a ferry is supposed to do. It's good to know, at least when you are travelling by car, that paying the trip comes last. First you enter the ferry, travel in it, drive... More
