Nothing special here, but it's the access to Sakurajima Island from the port at Kagoshima, a brisk 10-15 min walk from the station.
You pass a quaint tram stop outside the station, with a pretty flower display, before continuing another 3 - 4 blocks to reach the ferry terminal...nothing to see here.
The terminal is rather tired looking, and needs constant cleaning due to the volcanic ash spewed by that pesky volcano across the bay. Yes, there's a fine black "sand/soot" everywhere!
The ferry ride is only 15 min and before the port recedes into the distance, you find yourself at Sakurajima Island.
There have been previous reviews about the udon noodles available on the ferry, and I suggest that this experience, is only for the very hungry, that cannot wait, as better fare will be available upon return to the mainland

It is possible to drive around the bay and directly to Sakurajima (which isn't an island anymore since the last huge eruption when it connected to the Kyushu), but it is a very long drive. Hours! It is much better to hop on one of those ferries that go around the clock and you are on na island in no time while enjoying stunning views.

worth visiting and do buy the pass which saves a lot time and money.

Try the deck to enjoy the breeze and mt view and save the noodle or food (not really good and nothing special).

a must to buy bus pass if not driving and that is why the cute pass is advised where ferry and island bus all included.

If you have purchased a daily or bi-daily Welcome Cute, the ferry is included.

If you get off the team at the aquarium stop, it is only 5 minutes walking towards the harbour

At the gas station, you will see a big pier. Just go up the footbridge and get in the ferry, which is very frequent and is 24 hours service.

In a fine day, you can see the volcano (and eruptions if it just happens at the moment.)

After dark, you can look the other way to enjoy the night scenery of the city of Kagoshima.

If you still have time and energy, stroll along the left side of the pier and arrive at the Dolphin Harbour for nice dinners or coffee. Enjoy the foot bath near the restaurants and wrap up the ferry trip.

To go to Sakurajima from Kagoshima city, taking the ferry is the most convenient n fun way.

The ferry terminal is right next to the aquarium. The cityview bus n other local bus have a stop there. Very easy access. The ferry runs every 15min during daytime n longer intervals during night time, but it's 24 hours, so no need to rush to catch a particular time slot during daytime or worry about the return ride.

The ride is about 15min, inside the ferry, there are sofa styles seats n also seats in the front facing the volcano. A small udon eatery is available n also a snacks shop. We did try the udon but is not particularly good, but made it a more fun ride.

Btw, of u buy a one day CUTE pass which is 1000yen, it covers the ferry as well, so making it a good deal.

If you want to visit Sakurajima I highly recommend taking this lovely ferry. It is has a shabby chic to it which we found quite charming. The short trip to the volcano offers beautiful views. When you’re going back to Kagoshima I’m the evening hours you will enjoy a beautiful sunset.

I haven’t read the reviews but I am chuckling that this ferry wouldn’t get 5 stars. It runs every 15 minutes. It costs 200yen (less than 2USD?!). There’s a floor with air conditioned seating and a third floor with spectacular views and it literally takes you to one of the most active volcanoes in the world. Easiest 5-star rating I’ve given.

The ferry is a fairly ordinary car ferry that runs quite frequently around the clock.

As it approaches Sakura Jima, the views of the volcano are excellent.

The day that we went, we had an excellent view of the volcano spitting out an ash cloud that cast a heavy shadow onto the island.

Sakura Jima Ferry is convenient located with a short direct route from Kagoshima to Sakurajima. Precise timing, comfortable journey, with deck for many cars (we could have driven our car over). The ferry even offer raman enroute.

From Kagoshima Port Sakurajima can only be accessed by ferry. The ferry company start their operations early in the morning and run throughout the day a very frequent schedule. After arriving at Sakurajima the one down there starts its trip and this sequence continues the whole day as far as I could see. The distance between Kagoshima port and Sakurajima is less than 4 kilometres so the trip is a rather short one (about 15 minutes). Since cars are transported as well each trip there is a long line of cars waiting to board as well. The trip itself is a very pleasant one. You can sit outside or inside, or switch during the trip.
When you start off at Kagoshima you can simply board the ferry. You pay after disembarking at Sakurajima. The one way fare is just ¥ 160 for each individual.
