The bronze statue of Saigo Takamori is located at the foot of Shiroyama, where he committed suicide. At the border of Route 10, there is a photo area for the bronze statue of Saigo. The statue of Saigo Takamori seen from under the statue was huge (8m tall). Saigo-san reminds me of the bronze statue in Shibuya, but this Saigo-san is wearing a military uniform, which gives a different impression.

As a tourist attraction in the surrounding area,
Tsurumaru Castle is here.
As the parking lot of Tsurumaru Castle,
Since the parking lot of Reimeikan is available,
I parked my car there,
After seeing Tsurumaru Castle,
It's convenient to walk and come here.

I visited on tour. Mr. Saigo stands at the foot of Shiroyama, the final battlefield of the Satsuma Rebellion, the country's last civil war, in the uniform of an army general. It is 8m tall. There is a photography plaza in front of the pedestrian crossing, and there is even a smartphone stand so you can take photos from there. There is also a dog in the square. It looked just like the real thing, and both the dog and Saigo-san were photographed together.

We are NHK Taiga Drama fan, so we were looking for Saigo Takamori related things. If you are looking at the sign that says Saigo Takamori statue photo spot, the statue is behind you. It took us a few minutes to figure that out! The statue is light up at night.

This enormous statue greets you as you reach the top of the stairs at the entrance to Ueno Park. It is made of bronze and shows the great man with his dog. Saigo is a popular character in Japanese history thanks to the part he played as leader of the Restoration army. There is some explanation in English

I was very glad to have found the statue and the temple next door while exploring on foot around Kagoshima.

a stern looking statue definitely different from one in the Ueno.just located in the centre of city.around this statue many historical sights are scattered.Saigo was the most respected person during Meiji restoration by people in japan, this statue is wearing a military uniform in stead that Ueno wearing a jkpknese summer wear, which Saigo,s wife said this does not look like.

When we were on our 4 day bus tour going to different hot spring resorts we stopped briefly in Kagoshima and from the bus we saw the huge statue of Saigo Takamori and was very impressed.
A little later we could see it again from the Shiroyama View Point , it is apparently about 15 metres high. By this stage we had found out a little history about Saigo Takamori. He was a low ranked samurai warrior from Kagoshima who rose to the top not only as a warrior but also as a politician.
It seems he led a controversial political life and not agreeing with the Meiji Restoration Era of the late 1800s and wanting to retain the samurai way of life he retired from politics and took up arms with other unhappy samurai and fought against the Imperial Army. His last famous battle was here on Shiroyama Mountain . He with about 400 Samurai stood against 40,000 Imperial Troops and they all were killed meeting their end in honorable samurai style. The spot where he met his maker is held precious by the people here. The Tom Cruise movie THE LAST SAMURAI is said to be based on Saigo Takamori. He was loved by the people of this area and they have done him proud with this magnificent statue. A big statue of a giant of a man, visit if you can.

One of the most popular Japanese heroes is Saigo Takamori, a leader from the Meiji Restoration of the late 1860s. Here is a statue of Saigo who was believed to have died in combat on Shiroyama mountain.

My wife is completely consumed with this years 2018 Japanese Taiga Drama, which is based in Kagoshima. So we had to go on a pilgrimage to see Saigo Takamori’s statues. We know the one in Ueno quite well.

The volunteer guides nearby were helpful and good natured.

The statue itself is unremarkable.
