If you want to tour Kagoshima’s history, you’ll probably visit the statue of Saigo Takamori first. After that, you should stop by Saigo’s grave, about a kilometer away in a shrine on a hill overlooking Kagoshima and Sakurajima. There’s a cute little cafe there that makes kawaii lattes with Saigo’s and his dog Tsun’s face in the foam. It’s a quiet place with a great view, but relatively few people visit it.

The deities enshrined at Nanshu Shrine are Saigo Takamori and 6,800 soldiers killed in the Satsuma Army during the Seinan War. Many people came to pay their respects to Saigo Takamori's virtues and visit his grave, so in 1880 a worship hall was built next to the cemetery. In 1992, it was certified as an unranked shrine under the name "Nanshu Shrine." It is surprising that it has become a shrine, as many people come to pay their respects to Saigo and other warriors.
