The Hirakawa zoo is fairly easy to get to via train and/or bus. Ask for a map from the information counter at the central train station (Kagoshima Chuo) if going by train. Going by bus is a bit easier thou. I took the take the train and planned to walk to the zoo form the train stop, but it was... More

I actually liked the zoo. I read some of reviews about the upkeep of the animals and this is how I felt when I first visited the zoo two years ago. The camels (which are no longer there) looked very sick. The whole zoo seemed depressed and my husband and I were drained from seeing these animals in such poor... More

Things I observed at this zoo: -a nearly bald ostrich plucking out its own feathers. -monkeys fighting, screaming, crying, bleeding. -a white tiger crying, loudly for nearly 30 minutes straight. -baboons fighting, screaming, growling. This zoo confines animals to terribly small, filthy enclosures. The animals look unhealthy and appear distressed. Additionally, should the suffering of animals not be enough to... More

This zoo does not properly care for its animals. The cages are too small. They plan to swap some of their large cats for two elephant from the Cambodian government. Zoos should care about animal welfare. Cambodia does not have the resources to look after large cats in zoos, and elephants do not belong in a Japan zoo with a... More

It's not a big zoo but a nice one nonetheless. Easy to get to by public transport - 30 mins walk from the train station but you can take a bus there as well. There's a huge tiger here and really enjoyed our time. A good place to visit with kids.

I like zoos. I have been to zoos all over the world including Seattle, New York and London. While I did not expect Hirakawa Zoo to be as big or fancy as those zoos, I did at least expect that it would be a humane place for the animals. It was not. Please do not go there and do not... More
