This was a really neat little stop on Sakurajima. You can see the shrine gate that was buried by volcanic ash years and years ago. It is a small little area and won't take too long to see, but it is really cool.

Shrine gate buried in lava, worth a few minutes of your visit here to understand the scale at which volcanoes eruptions are powerful.

A buried shrine gate reminds of powerful volcano eruption many years ago. It is preserved for historical value.

It has been there buried in ashes for a hundred years. Originally 3 meter high, only the top of the Torii emerges about 1 m above ground. The landmark is well sign posted but you may miss it if you are not attentive.
