This shrine buried by volcanic ash was restored by junior high children. The displays are all in Japanese; so, I would not have known had my local hosts shared that info. It's just impressive that the kids exposed the top of the shrine and there is another 6' (2 meters) below

It is impressive to see it. The power of nature could be scary. Park the car opposite the shrine gate for free. Dont park at the car park in front of the gate. It costs you. You dont need to spend much time for this site, maybe around 15-20 minutes including walking

2 meters of ash of covered the town in one day. It is scary to see the top of the gate because it could happen again. The volcano was smoking a lot the day we visited. Just near the gate is the school, cemetery and a shelter to protect from falling stones....I couldnt live

This buried shrine gate is on the road side which is accessible by a bus that run around the island, or can hire a taxi or drive to here. Visiting here offer a chance to imagine the powerful down pour of hot volcanic ashes and the aftermath it can caused.

This was a really neat little stop on Sakurajima. You can see the shrine gate that was buried by volcanic ash years and years ago. It is a small little area and won't take too long to see, but it is really cool.
