I found Shofuku-ji Temple by accident just wandering around Fukuoka. I was here later in the evening close to dark, I had the grounds to myself. First thing I noticed, there were cats guarding the temple! Not really, but who knows, there were quite a...More

While I was looking for Tochoji, I found this. After visiting Tochoji, came back to visit the place. It was like a very tranquil and peaceful park. I enjoyed my peaceful moment. There was an anniversary for a person who passed away, I presume, so...More

One of the oldest zen temples in Japan, with large grounds and several buildings. There are several shrines in the neighbourhood, and a Buddhist cemetery.

Shofukuji Temple is the oldest Zen temple in Japan. Outside of Kyoto and Nara, I have seldom seen such an impressive temple. The entrance is free, and as I visited there, a black cat was taking a walk in premises.

Few visitors when I arrived early morning of Dec 3. Very peaceful and beautiful. Can be combined when visiting the Kuroda Shrine and Tocho-ji Temple.

A bit smallish compared to other notable temples sites around Japan. It was nice that there were just a few people when we were there adding to the serenity of the place. Lots of tall trees and the gardens are well maintained. We practically had...More

This is a beautiful temple with lovely old buildings, an impressive gate and serene and quiet gardens. It's within walking distance of Tochoji, Jotenji and the Kushida-jinja so make it part of your temple and shrine walking tour -- you can do all these sights...More

This was my third favorite religious site in Fukuoka - after Tochoji and Kushida. This is the first Zen temple in Japan - founded way back in 1195. The temple - they say - is true to the original design. We found the grounds virtually...More

This temple is just behind Tochojin Temple, a little obscure (like a hidden street). We combined visiting both on a Friday noontime. Shofukuji is classified as a National Historical Site, and excellent example of a classic Zen temple. There are some impressive buildings within; include...More
