My hotel was not far from here. Sumiyoshi Shrine was my first of the kind while visiting Japan. I found the grounds here to be very peaceful and natural. This shrine is pretty big, there are a lot of sections to it. Although big, it...More

The grandest entry way leading to the shrines entrance of the temples/shrines that I visited. Very well maintained with great gardens surrounding. It was early morning when I arrived, about 9, and it was very quiet. Easy walk from Grand Hyatt.

Located within 5 minute walk from Watanabedori Subway Station. Very beautiful shrine with small koi pond. A great getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Sumiyoshi shrine is a big Shinto shrine near Hakata station. I went there for new year’s Hatsumode. Unfortunately it was rainy on that day, but there were still many visitors. Although in the center of city, the premises are quiet. It is a nice place...More

Simple and rather small shrine compared to many others but have a heartwarming feel to it. Was abit troublesome when raining due to the puddles and almost got my shoes wet. But overall good experience with a lot of locals around (you can learn how...More

A peaceful park type shrine in the middle of the city. Well worth a quiet wander. Caught the tail end of a wedding and sumo wrestlers finishing up.

New Year's Sumiyoshi Shrine Visit (2 Replies)
I will be in Osaka for new year's and am planning on going to Sumiyoshi shrine with a friend. What time do you recommend queuing up to be one for the first in at midnight? Aside from that, any good ideas or tips on to make the night awesome would be appreciated too!

The gate will open at 22:00 on December 31. What time to go is totally up to you--how long are you willing to wait in cold? Sumiyoshi will be scary packed on New Year's Eve/Day, so brace yourself and dress warm. Personally. I'd avoid the mobs of people and go there after ~5pm on Jan 1st.

You mean Yasukuni Shrine? Sumiyoshi is in Osaka. From Hanzomon Station, Yasukuni Shrine is about a 10 minute walk. You can take the Hanzomon Line to Kudanshita (1 stop) and go out of Exit 1 if you prefer.
