About
Atago shrine, one of the three greatest Atago shrines in Japan, which hears your prayer and fulfills your wishes. Brief history of Atago Shrine: (the shrine was once called Wasio Shrine,) Atago shrine is located on the top of Mt,Atago ｓｕｒｒｏｕｎｄｅｄ by beautiful green hills and by the Muromi River, with clean water that flows gently in the west district of Fukuoka City. Since many years ago, the Atago Shrine has been familiarized by Fukuoka Citizens as “Gods to pray for fulfillment” Approx 1900 years ago,in the rein of Emperor Keikoh, two gods, “Amenooshihomimino-mikoto” and “Izanagino-mikoto” were enshrined. In 1633, Tadayuki Kuroda, feudal lord ，the 2nd of the Kuroda clan, built a shrine atop the hill and invited two gods, “Homusubinokami” and “Izanamino-mikoto” from Atago Shrine in Yamashiro Province to enshrine them in the new shrine. Since them, people began to call the hill Mount Atago and thereupon, Atago Shrine was positioned center as main shrine and Washio Shrine was located

There're several routes to reach this shrine from Tenjin or Hakata station area. The easiest is alight the subway line at Muromi station and cross the bridge and the intersection under the expressway flyover. Then turn right at the shrine sign (not at the intersection). It is a kind of narrow and winding residence slope road. You'll be able to reach there. If you're in late March or early April, i.e., cherry blossom season, walk down the Meiji Dori Street, the same street you cross the bridge, for 5-10 minutes more. You'll find 7/11 convenience store on your right hand. There's steps to the shrine at the back of 7/11. They're steep steps, but it is cherry blossom tunnel. When it's in bloom, it's really worth it.
There's another lookout nearby. Walk toward the western side 2nd car park. It is a small park. On the top of the observation steps, you'll be able to see the western side of Hakata Bay, including Nokonoshima Island.

We visited during Sakura season, a little on the early side and Atago Jinja Shrine was our favourite of the variety of Sakura viewing places we went to. It's a bit of a walk up the hill but worth it for the Sakura and the view out across Fukuoka.

The view on Fukuoka from this shrine is simply amazing. The shrine itself is ok, it looked in renovation or something. I really enjoy the view there and I think it’s the best view on Fukuoka, you can see almost everywhere from up there. I don’t know if actually many tourists know this place, by its worth it for the view into my opinion. To reach this shrine up the hill, exit at subway station Muromi.

Subway ride.
Long climb through residential area.
Many, many stairs.
The closer we got to the top of the hill, the climb changed from walking through (very) hilly residential streets to climbing stairs under tall trees. Partway to the shrine ( we had no idea how far you've come and how much longer the climb will be) there’s a model of a small pagoda and a small Inari shrine, both worth many photos.
It took us about a half an hour from the time we left the subway to our arrival at the top, but we spent a lot of time at the Inari shrine photograhing.
Once we arrive at the top, we photo the main hall which is small. There are just a few other buildings in the compound. Other visitors seem more interested in the views of the city scape than the shrine itself. We are not that keen on large cityscapes. We photograph instead the shrine, especially the details: the carvings, the statues of bulls, horses, the bell…
We watch some kids feed pigeons; the birds climb on the kids - the whole scene results in good photos.
We hadn’t seen many sakura at the shrine - in fact, we hadn’t seen many cherry trees in bloom in Fukuoka as the season this year seemed slow to start. On the walk down we do see a few trees in bloom. We also spent a little more time looking at the residential district and inspected the houses a bit more closely. We puzzled over a little temple and monastery (?) with its painted statues near the bottom.
We were back at the subway elevator sooner than we expected and we had time to explore other parts of Fukuoka.

Very nice place to take pictures of Fukuoka. Although it is away from the city center, access is reasonably easy and cheap via the Subway (Airport line, Muromi Stn. The shrine is located on a hill with a great views over the city, Fukuoka Tower and bay area. Especially recommended during cherry blossoming. Splendid.

Visited at night where you can see the city lights and the cherry trees lighted up. Quite disappointed as there were not many trees

Located on a hill, you have a nice view on the Western outskirts of Fukuoka. Atago or Atago Gongen is protecting the city from fire.The original Atago Shrine can be found on Mount Atago near Kyoto. It serves as the head shrine for almost one thousand Atago shrines in japan.
If you go to the Atago Shrine in Fukuoa very very early in the morning you will meat friendly elderly people doing their daily exercises after voluntarily cleaning up the area.
Sunrise is great and there are some rare birds in the thick forests surrounding the top of the hill. Before the separation of Buddhism and Shinto in the early Meiji-period everything in this area was mixed up. You will still find a couple of buddhist stone sculptures near the entrance on the right hand side.

It's an uphill walk going there but when you see the view, the uphill walk is worth it. I loved the view which shows the view of the city, you can see fukuoka tower from the viewing deck. A local was kind enough to show me the way going to to the shrine from the train station.

Lovely shrine on the top of the hill, with cherry blossoms and views of Fukuoka.
I'm rating this lower simply because it's out of the way and a bit difficult to find, and because there are equally nice shrines in the city centre.

Serene and quiet place in a bustling city. Many steps to go up, but will be rewarded with Very nice view of Fukuoka from the top of the hill. Especially nice is the Atago mochi and matcha in the traditional tea house just outside near the entrance to the shrine.
