We enjoyed our ferry and train trip to the island on a very hot day . Unfortunately if you don’t cycle there is little to do in the heat. Little fishing village on the way to the temple was interesting but had little to offer. We were fortunate to find somewhere for lunch. The owner was kind and the food fresh and we were happy to rest. In my opinion it is not somewhere to explore or hike. More information in English at the wharf may have helped. Included photo of our lifesaving lunch spot.

I have 1 free day in Fukuoka before I meet my family to travel around Kyushu. I decided to do something that I can do alone. Bike around small island in Fukuoka is my wonderful choice. I sent an email to one of the bike rental shop there at Shika Island. Staff answer my question so good. I took bus from my hotel to take ferry at hakata futo(wharf) took about 20 minutes with one stop before I reached there. Ferry is so bog and so good even-though not many passengers but the ferry still service on time. Once I arrive Shika Island I directly go to bike shop . Staff can remember me And so nice to adjust everything with my bike and also give me details of where I should bike around which take appox 1 hour around an island. Shika Island is one of a wonderful place for sightseeing biker. Safe for women solo bike. Clean safe and so beautiful scenic around. Recommend!!

I rent a bicycle at Shikashima Cycle near harbor. Climbing up to Shiomi Park is worth sweating. 360 degree ocean view was fabulous. Take a route from north, which is less steep than from south. Lunch at Hamakouya. Their Sashimi seafood was incredibly fresh. Enjoyed hotspring at Kyukamura. Rental fee for bicycle is from 2000 yen for three hours. Wonderful short trip.

A friend and I cycled from Tenjin to Shikanoshima and found it to be an enjoyable and not terribly difficult trip. From Tenjin to Shikanoshima, you do pass through a bit of an industrial zone, that isn't overly interesting but the uminonakamichi area before that is beautiful and the island itself is quite scenic as well. The island is supposedly 10km around, but it takes no time at all to do if you are just doing the circumference. There are a couple different routes, one through the island, which could be challenging as it is fairly hilly. It looked as though some younger people had come in to open up shops to attract people to the island, there was a curry shop and a cycling cafe, where you could rent a bike for 2500 yen or so if you didn't have your own. On our trip, we cycled to the other side of the island, stopped at the hotel there for an ice cream and coffee and finished our circuit in good time. We had a late lunch at the restaurant/tourist center (???), a beautiful sashimi set with far more food than we expected. After, we caught the ferry back to Bayside Hakata (be sure to buy your tickets and the tickets for your bicycles more than 5 minutes before the ferry leaves to ensure that you can get your bicycle on!) and from there cycled home.

Took the ferry from Fukuoka (only 3 people) to the Island. In the summer it's crowded, but off season I was almost alone. Rented a bicycle and rode around the perimeter in about an hour. Gorgeous views, light traffic, and good exercise.
