About
50 minutes from Kansai International Airport (Osaka) by car. The largest number of tuna cutting shows in Japan. The fattiest part of tuna (Otoro) sushi is must-eat in this market. It's a kind of tourist seafood market. At the seaside BBQ area, you can grill & eat all the seafood purchased in Kuroshio Market. Some of the seafood can be prepared as Sashimi or steamed/boiled, free of charge.

This didn’t have the atmosphere of a local market like the one at namba which is excellent. They aim for the Japanese tourist with a focus on packaged up local produce including fruit, fish and pickles and drinks. The tuna carving was entertaining and we got a free sample. The tuna carving possibly made it worth the visit so time it well otherwise I wouldn’t bother.

Located just next to the Wakayama Marina, the Kuroshio Market is a market that sells a lot of seafood products.

The main highlight here would be the tuna cutting demonstration, where a skilled guy would showcase the different parts of the tuna while cutting it up. The demonstration is all in Japanese though, so you would have to rely purely on visuals. Be sure to stand in front of the tuna cutting counter at least 10 minutes before the start of the demonstration if you wish to have a good view.

The rest of the market is made up of stalls offering different types of seafood, as snacks and as meals. The products are rather pricey though, as fresh and tasty as they look.

Kuroshio Market was not a special seafood market in Japan, but I think the price of the food was cheaper than Tokyo & Osaka and it was delicious too.

In front of the Market, there have a road can walk to the sea viewpoint, and have many people are fishing there.

And I very suggested the family with young children go there and visit the theme park also. the theme not too big, but can fulfill the children and parents.

Went to Kuroshio market with our JR Pass by train (then 5 minutes bus, also covered by JR Pass) from Wakayama Station to Marina Bay Wakayama. The chef, a very experienced young guy, spoke in impressive tone in Japanese, did both the demo and the explanation. The tuna fish was easily 60kg, yet it was a perfect knife skill show !! It is worth a trip going for the show. The Kuroshio Market has free wifi with strong reception. There was 3 shows per day, ie. 11am, 12.30pm & 3pm. After which, there were some free samplings of the otoro sashimi near the left lane. We totally enjoyed our Kuroshio market trip.

In less than 2 hours from Osaka, we arrived by train and bus from JR Kainan Station. The 15 mins bus ride from Kainan Station was 380 yen. It was relatively easy to find the bus stop - just follow the blue line on the floor leading from the station exit to the bus stop! Alight at the Marina City bus stop - lots of people get off here so it's easy. You get onto the bus from the back door and pull a ticket from the machine. There is an electronic panel above the front door which will indicate your fare when you are getting off. If you do not have exact change, slot your 1000 yen note into the coin changing machine next to the driver and it will dispense change. Then put the fare into the coin slot. Easy as that! Everyone is very patient and will wait for you to complete this. Or you can change your money while the bus is moving if you don't want to hold people up.

We watched the 11am tuna filleting show. Although in Japanese, it was nevertheless entertaining and educational. We then bought live seafood, which was not expensive, from the many stalls there and otoro sushi (pack of 8 pieces for 2000 yen) and headed for the outdoor BBQ area. To our surprise, they had staff there to turn on the gas BBQ grill on the tables, which came complete with plates and cutlery at no extra cost. Drinking water was also free from a dispenser. Once you are done, they clear up the table.

The live clams (600 yen) were delicious, and so was the sea bream (500 yen each) and uni (sea urchin 1000yen). Needless to say, the otoro sushi was heavenly. We bought a bottle of cold sake to share at 700 yen. A seaside BBQ with fresh live seafood and sake with the sea breeze blowing and a view of the blue sea was simply heavenly. But if you can't be bothered to cook, you can always buy the cooked stuff including yakitori and rice bowls from the stalls there.

I would highly recommend you visiting this fish market and eat the fresh seafood. I have been to other seafood markets like the one in Sydney and Auckland but nothing beats this one. You get a gas grill and service at no additional charge as a bonus!

Alot of fresh seafood to buy and eat. Got to watch the Tuna filleting event. (11:00am, 12:30p, and 3:00pm) If you come via public Bus, best to check the bus timings when u reached the market. You might have to wait up to an hour if i remember correctly.

Many people said that this is one of the best seafood market in Japan. In this summer, we have visited two other seafood markets: Toretore market in Shirahama, and Kuromon market in Osaka, both are also popular. However, this one in Wakayama are not good when compared with the others, because there are only 2-3 shops selling fresh seafood, the others mainly for dried and pickled food and souvenirs.

Only regular cutting tuna demonstration is good here: 11am, 12:30pm and 3pm everyday at the main entrance.

We were brought there by tour agent. There were giant tuna cutting demonstration at a few scheduled time slot. We manage to watch the 15 mins demonstration. There were also lots of seafood and wakayama local produce for sale here.
We have our lunch at the buffet on 1st floor. Tuna sashimi is served in this buffet. Not many choices of food. But based on the price the food is still acceptable. You can also buy fresh sashimi or grilled seafood at ground floor near tuna cutting demonstration.

And I have lived there for 15 years. Kuroshio market ranks up there as one of the best fishmarkets in Japan, and it is a relative newcomer. I believe the entertainment district where it is located next to an European theme park was built in the last five years. The fishmarket offers a tuna cutting exhibition in the mornings. There are many food stalls to order food such as seafood on rice, ramen, or you can pick a large variety of seafood and shellfish and barbecue it yourself on a grill. As expected, there are gift shops to buy perishable seafood or sweets. On the 2nd floor is a buffet restaurant that I did not have the pleasure of trying because as the title says, I opted to eat at a maguro restaurant instead. But the buffet restaurant advertised an impressive menu and I believe the price was around 1250 yen for lunch.

The day I visited, I decided to try a maguro restaurant on the 2nd floor. It is tucked away in the back, facing the theme park. I ate a maguro teishoku consisting of 8-10 generous slices of sashimi, a piece of fried maguro, and some other maguro dish. But the sashimi was probably the best I've eaten in Japan because for one thing, the Wakayama area is famous for maguro, but the slices were large and filled your mouth. The pieces were not the fatty type but lean, which is what I and most foreigners prefer, and the chilled temperature was perfect. You can also buy maguro trays of sashimi on the first floor. All of the maguro is primo quality.

I enjoyed my meal at this restaurant so much, when I left Japan for good flying out of Kansai Airport, I stopped off at Kuroshio Market again but unfortunately it was late in the afternoon and it was closed,

Besides Kuroshio Market, there are many things to do in the area such as visit the theme park. The fake buildings are quite amazing and look like an Italian village. There is a fruit and vegetable market next to the fishmarket. Locals can go fishing at a fishing park on the far side of the harbor. There is an onsen across the street, and luxury hotels if you want to stay overnight in the area. The whole district is quite far from Wakayama train station (10 km), and you will have to take a bus or car.

Travelers who are interested in the lifestyle and culture of tourist attractions do not miss this market where a local fruit village(market) is adjacent. The must is tasting local fresh seafood & fruits and watching the first time of tuna slice at 11.00 hrs.
