Tucked away at the edge of Wakayama prefecture is Awashima Jinjaan, one of only
two doll shrines in Japan.
Most Japanese people claim to be non religious
but an animistic veneration for objects still exists.

Dolls, being human shaped are particularly important,so every year 10 , 000 unloved dolls
are sent to the shrine to be exorcised and then
buried at sea
the priests divide them into categories;..princess
samurais and dangerous.dolls whose hair and fingernails grow dolls which are somehow possessed
these dolls are hidden from public view of course
but the ones you can see are a fascinating gallery

The shrine is just about 5 min walk from the ferry port Kada. Basically it's just a very small shrine but interesting to note that it contained various dolls and figurines of samurai, animals etc etc scattered over the shrine compounds. I estimated it to be over 1000 pieces of them. Quite a sight, and unseen anywhere in Japan, but other than that, there is nothing else. A good short stopover after visiting Tomogasahima, if you still have time.

Interesting to see as part of a tour, but not worth a special visit unless you have a particular interest.

Visited this shrine on Sunday, it’s about 1600km from Kada station and next to the beach. The shrine houses various different dolls, which were very unique and also a bit creepy.

A shrine that houses all sorts of Japanese dolls along with many other figurines. Interesting at the same time quite spooky... as some believe that dolls have spirits and should be properly disposed at the shrine.

A 20 mins walk from Kada Train Station and a 45 mins train ride from Wakayamashi Station to Kada Station on board the Medetai “Happy” train. The Medetai train is part of the Nankai All Line 2day Pass.

很棒的神社! 有很獨特的景色,一堆的人形娃娃和日本的吉祥物,陳千上萬的陳列在這邊,很值得來一趟! 逛完可以去旁邊的淡鳩溫泉泡湯。very impressive shrine in Kansai! you can see a bunch of dolls and the blessing characters here, you can take great pictures here!

There are a few carparks around the shrine. As it's so crowded on weekends in summer and the carparks seem so packed, we were nearly driven to park at one opposite the Shrine's torii at 700 yen (full day). Fortunately we decided to check out. After passing the torii for 50 meters on the left, there's a small carpark on the left. It's operated by Times and you will get a ticket at the machine at the gate.

Just present the ticket to the staff at the gift shop to enjoy 30 min free parking. As the Shrine is not big, 30 minutes is enough. We spent just 15 min to look around once, without going into the museum as it's closed

This jinja is by the sea with long scenic drive along coast from ang through Kansai airport. Its uniqueness is the collections of dolls in the shrine complexes with zoning: japanese costume boy and girl dolls, Tanuki( the raccoons), Gero ( frogs), white foxes, zodiac animals. There is local store selling local products , fresh from sea.

This shrine is about 15 minutes walk from Kada station and a couple of minutes from the ferry point. It is crammed full of dolls, figurines and ceramic figures. A cheerful place and a delight to visit.

Nice Shrine, with various different animal sculptures, next to the Onsen Hiina No Yu. There are little shops and restaurants nearby open durring the afternoon, good view of the ocean. BE CAREFUL when it rains!
