Beautiful castle on a huge sight. Really big park. Will take a long time if you want to see it all.

Beautiful castle on a huge sight. Really big park. Will take a long time if you want to see it all.
Actually, the best spot to take a photo of the castle is from down in the city.
While you are in the castle ground, you can not take a photo of the whole thing...

The Castle on the hill surrounded by a park and mini zoo
Dec 2019
The Edo period castle is full of valuable antique items and surrounded by city walls, towers, moats, bridge, gate, garden and city viewpoints. When the leaves change color or cherry blossoms, it is the most beautiful. Value for money and visit time.

Worthwhile a visit if you pass by Wakayama. The "castle" has a small enclosed garden but excellent 360 deg views from the top. It houses a desultory museum with a few samurai armor suits and shogun scrolls. Its most impressive feature is the overall strategic design, which is brilliant - I tried to imagine what it 'd take to take this castle by force in 17th century. The Tokugawas clearly knew how to build a defensive fort.

Well-preserved castle with beautiful garden
Nov 2019
The castle is very well-preserved externally, though on the inside you'll find that it is more a museum of overall warfare than a history of the castle. The grounds are stunning, too. It's well worth a visit.

Castle with a View
Nov 2019 • Family
It was early November when we travelled to Osaka, and we did a day trip to Wakayama. We went to see Wakayama Castle and the Fish Market. We used the stairs going up to Wakayama Castle (not senior friendly) , and once you are there you are greeted with a snack / souvenir shop, ninja's, and a beautiful garden. Inside the castle is a museum of different samurai uniforms and swords. Also the view at the top is breathtaking.

A HIGHLIGHT OF THE CITY
Nov 2019
This is a very beautiful sticking up through the fall colors, the interior like so many other is devoted to its history. If seen from the right vantage point it is as impressive of any other well known castles.

Smaller castle, nice displays
Nov 2019
This smaller castle in the town of Wakayama is easy to get to by bus. As most castles in Japan, it has been rebuilt due to fire and the surrounding town area is mostly gone. There are stairs to get up to the gate and in the castle, but not as bad as some other castles. The samurai displays are interesting, some English explanations available. The view from the top of the castle is nice. The garden and bridge are nice to walk around and don’t forget to go to the museum and watch the film on the castle’s history. There is also a nice giftshop.

Wakayama Castle, Gardens and Zoo (Ouch)
Oct 2019 • Couples
The beautiful walkabout the castle and gardens was spoilt by a very badly maintained zoo. The animals and birds were housed in very badly maintained spaces. A poor bear looked more than distressed. I would urgently ask the Wakayama city council to action the CLOSURE of this zoo and the animals and birds transferred more humane locations.

This zoo totally distracted from a visit to lovely location.

SHUT DOWN THIS ZOO😫

An important cultural property
Mar 2019 • Couples
It is located at the peak of Mt. Torafusu,48.9m. The castle living quarters occupies the Eastern area of the peak and the castle tower complex occupies the West. Visitors entered through the main entrance, Otemon Gate to visit the castle. There is a garden with a pleasant pond and a waterfall. Many exhibits to be seen at the Wakayama Museum of Modern Art. Can looked down at Wakayama from the top of the castle. Do look out for the unique Ohashi Rouka Bridge.
