The fact that these carvings and casts have survived all these years is truly amazing. So many must have been lost in temple fires that happened over the centuries. Entry ticket for an additional sum will get you to see the "medicine Buddhas" in the To]kondo

I was at a scientific meeting in Nara, and we were walked through this collection one morning. Nara Park has many cultural centres, pagodas, halls and so on. Kohfukuji was founded in the eighth year of the reign of Emperor Tenji (669 CE). Surprisingly so many of the statues and artefacts survived the persecution of Buddhists during the Meiji period. It takes perhaps 1/2 3/4 hour to walk through the exhibits. Highlights are the two wooden statues of The Niō (Jp. = Benevolent Kings), a pair of protectors who commonly stand guard outside the temple gate at Japanese Buddhist temples. One has his mouth open and the other his mouth closed. The sculpture is of high detail. Look for the veins standing out on the legs, and the muscles of the torso. Also look for the multi-armed, multi faced deity, a forty-armed golden statue and many (well some) more. Explanations are in English and there is a small shop. Get mugged by the famous deer on the way out of the park.

The musuem is located next to the East Golden Hall and 5 storey pagoda.
We came here quite late and it was close already. Heard that they have pretty impressive Buddhist relics and statues on display inside.

This is the biggest temple in Nara Park, you can purchase a ticket just outside of its gate. It is really beautiful inside but you cannot take pictures.

There is so much going on at Kofuku-ji; so many things to see. I enjoyed the temple as much as the other structures at the complex.

After extensive travels throughout Asia over a two-week period, we were a little tired of museums, all of which began to look the same. But this one was different, FINALLY!
An enormous thousand-armed Kannon serves as the centerpiece of the museum. The eight Devas and ten Great Disciples are in remarkable condition, especially the stunning Ashura statue viewed by millions, and all date back over 500 years. This museum is certainly worth visiting. And the cool air-conditioning offered a respite from the brutal summer heat.

On my second visit to this museum I was still amazed by the outstanding Buddhist relics I saw before me. The statues were beautifully sculpted and it inspires reverence of those who made them. This is one of the places that I recommend for those visiting Nara.

This place is an amazing small museum, with some great 14 century finds. The big Buddha is amazing. Sneaky photo taken and added! Kids will be bored and most of the exhibits explanations are in Japanese but there is an English written guide ask for it at the front desk. There are coffee shops etc around the area if it rains, take water if it's hot, there's no shop.

There were a few English descriptions, but mostly you just had to look at the items on view without understanding any context. Beautiful treasures, but beauty without knowledge isn't really useful. Kids were bored and adults had to spend time shushing them, as many adults are there praying. Don't go out of your way to visit.
