We went on two different private tours with Oishii Tokyo Food Tours during the holiday season in December, 2016. Both tours were outstanding, and we highly recommend Oishii. As the title indicates, two tours were not enough! Had we known how great they would be, we would have re-arranged our travel schedule and booked a different food tour with Oishii (for a different Tokyo neighborhood) each night we were in town.
After researching our options, we selected Oishii and began working with Meg on the arrangements. Our requests were complex, since we were traveling during the holiday season (many places were closing down) and had specific time requirements based on our schedule. These were not issues -- Meg arranged an itinerary to meet our needs.
Our first tour was with Meg in the Meguro area. Within 3 to 4 hours of arriving in Tokyo, we had already: literally caught a fish in a restaurant, eaten fresh sushi made from the fish we caught, sampled great tempura and dined on smoked duck. We also tried some exotic desserts (gelato and cheesecake made from celery). All of this happened at quaint and unique local restaurants. Meg was an excellent guide! She interpreted everything for us and shared a lot about Japanese culture during our experience, and answered all of our questions.
A few nights later we toured Shimbashi with Nimo. This was also a great experience. Our tour began with a drink on the 46th floor of a high-rise building that provided a sweeping view of Tokyo at night. We then visited several places, where we ate: Japanese-style tapas dishes (pork, chicken, croquettes), grilled vegetables, and a variety of sushi and scallops. We also sampled high-quality sake and beer, and had drinks with some locals that we met at one of the bars we visited. Our tour ended with some superb pork ramen. We made an instant connection with Nimo. He was an outstanding guide! He educated us on all-things Japanese and we shared lots of great conversation throughout the tour.
