Now is the time to see early blooming sakura, "Kawazu-zakura" in Utsunomiya.
Kawazu-zakura, one kind of sakura, is in a full bloom here in Utsunomiya, Tochigi Japan.
This day, It was a pleasant sunny day, many families and couples were spending time according to each one's wish.

Typically, sakura blooms around late march but this species is already in a full bloom.
This sakura has pinker color and larger pedals compared to the other cherry blossoms.
The name "Kawazu" comes from the place in Izu Peninsula in central Japan, where it was discovered.

It was a warm sunny day this day, many visitors were spreading their picnic ground sheets and having a pleasant time. Families having lunch under the warm sunny sky, parents and children playing badminton, couples having a nice little walk, photographers concentrating on taking an amazing shot, and so on.

Small castle park area, looks nice from the outside and you can go inside the towers. It’s a nice little bit of history and there was a small room with some information about a festival held in the town.
Must visit if in Utsunomiya

The ruins and park are worth a visit. Well kept and easily accessible. The two towers are accessible and feature a modest exhibition.

Whilst normally I shy away from reconstructions and even excessive repairs this complete reconstruction of one wall of the outer defenses of the Utsunomiya castle is bold and a worthy investment by the city. It doubles as an event site and emergency evacuation site with mature trees and on my visit sakura. The walls and watch towers allow an appreciation of the design and construction skills and the very competent volunteer guides provided a clear and informative briefing in the display area (in Japanese and English).

Nothing much to do, but to take a picture of the renovated castle 🏰.
I went during sakura season. But the sakura trees are in front of the castle not near the castle.
Best spot for jogging and strolling with dogs or friends.

This is not a real castle, it's a reconstruction of what's left of the ruins. The grounds are used for all sorts of different events, festivals like Tennosai where all the mikoshi gather before the procession to the shrine, or for a giant outdoor gyoza fest when all the gyoza shops set up stands there and sell dumplings.
Otherwise, the park itself is easy to get to, but not a must-see, if you are in Utsunomiya.

It is a good place to go for a walk but the castle itself is not so impressive, and very small. It shows some explanation of the castle in old times, but the castle itself is not so old.

It's a new castle, don't think you are going to check a very old building, but it's very nice on the surroundings, not a main trip :)
