We went up the mountains from Nikko at the start of March. As we got up higher there was more snow about. One problem is that at this time of the year some of the attractions such as the Ropewlk are closed.

You can get excellent maps of the local walking trails from the tourist office. There is very good bus coverage to take you to the trails. Spectacular waterfalls, and beautiful mountains. Make sure to wear long trousers as we got bitten by insects.
