I got off the bus thinking I'd be able to get straight on the cable car up the mountain and start my walk. I was wrong. In winter things don't always go according to plan. Anyway, the view from this site is nice enough. Mt Nantai was shrouded in mist. But it was kind of lovely.

We went there on a foggy and rainy day and the management did put out a sign that said visibility is extremely low due to the fog. That's why we didn't get on the ropeway. And we appreciate how the Japanese make things transparent.

But still we waited a little outside the ropeway station and managed to see the fog clears up momentarily, revealing Houtou falls and Irohazaka Route... quite magical.

Moderately good views of the Kegon Waterfall and of Lake Chujenji on a non-sunny November day. Get off the bus from Nikko to Chuzengiko at the first stop after it finishes the 48 hairpin bends on the ascending road. This is the stop for the Akechidaira Ropeway (known as a cable-car outside Japan) to the observatory. An hour later you can catch another bus to continue to the town of Chuzengiko. Buses returning from Chuzengiko to Nikko do not stop here as the descending road is a different one.

lets you take in all of okunikko in one sight, including Kegon falls, Mount Nantai and Lake Chuzenji. but be sure to go on a clear day. great that there is a camera at the base of the ropeway, where the staff actually pointed out that the conditions of the day that we visited wasn't too good for viewing so one can decide whether to continue up or not (which we did despite the less than ideal condition).

A must visit to see Mt. Nantai.
Cable car to Kegon falls subject to wind conditions. I think the service is interrupted by wind very often.

It was only on my 3rd attempt (on different days) before I managed to get up to the observation area. The last 2 attempts were unsuccessful as it was windy and the cable car stopped operation. However, when I was up, the sights were beautiful and it made it all worthwhile.

You can stop here and take the ropeway ie. cablecar up to the viewpoint as a taster of Kegon falls and lake Chuzenji. Not especially busy when I was there (August) and 20 minutes is enough time to spend on it. Back at the departure point there are a couple of shops and a restaurant. Be mindful of the bus times or you could get stuck for a while with not a lot to do.

the ropeway is known as the best way to view the autumn foliage, it provides an overall view of the Kegon waterfall + Chuzenji Lake + Nantaisan. But take note you must later on take the bus up to Chuzenji onsen to take bus back to Nikko becoz the way back to Nikko Station is different from the way up

Since we are from the Netherlands, and everything there is pretty flat, this is really amazing. The view of the falls and lake are so beautiful, it is like looking at a painting. Seeing the tiny cars, boats, it is so wonderful.

Since it was on the way up to Okunikko, we stopped by, took the short ropeway ride to the viewing platform. Admittedly one could see great views from 2 ends....facing Nikko and the other Lake Churenji and beyond. But felt I could jave seen this from the other lookouts we drove to.
