With its serene lakes, mountainous forests, and picturesque waterfalls, Nikko National Park is one of Japan’s most stunning nature reserves, situated on the incredibly scenic—and hard to reach on your own—Romantic Road. On this exciting tour, escape the bustle of Tokyo with an invigorating day in the Japanese countryside, including a visit to a spectacularly decorated UNESCO World Heritage–listed Shinto shrine.

A hiking trail with good steps and clear signages. If you hike through the 1445 steps the view up there is just extraordinary. We had wonderful hike during the winter with some snow fall. The facility is in good condition and staffs are very friendly.

Visited this place in mid-July, and they have orange daylily along the hiking path. Amazing and Beautiful!! The flower season is from June to mid-July. Don’t miss this fairytale-like place when you visit Nikko.

As previous posters have already mentioned, the highlands are best visited in autumn when the leaves turn brownish red and the golden colored larch trees give of a nice shiny glow under the sunlight. However, pick a non cloudy day to come for this wonderful hike as this area is notorious for its mist and on a cloudy day, the mist will almost certainly hinder your vision and you will be barely able to see a thing the higher you hike.

This highland is easy to arrive by public bus from Nikko station. Visitor centre prepared some routes for different level visitors. I think autumn is best season for this highland, in summer just some green and it's really hard for 1000 stairs in hot day. The day I went to is 35degree and I can't go to the top.

It takes about 30min to climb to the top but the view is nice and you get a bit of exercise also. There is no vending machine or shop at the top, so if you want to eat or drink something, buy that before you start climbing.
