Located a short way out of Nikko and next to the Misty Mountain Restaurant is this short but up and down hike to an observation deck to the falls. At the bottom the view was tremendous with a fall of many stages. We did not agree with the name because there was no misting because it seemed quite forceful. Apparently Kirifuri is so named because of its misting effect. It fell a long way. It was eighty metres tall and one of Nikko’s three most prominent falls.

The falls are off in the distance so you'll need some sort of zoom lens for a picture in any season.
It is a 270 m walk along a mostly stone paved trail. it could be slippery when wet so wear appropriate footwear.

Stunning beautiful!! Check the weather forecast and bus timetable and enjoy the excellent view. Kirifuri Falls is closer to the World Heritage area and free of traffic jams.

Kirifuri Waterfall was another nice waterfall in Nikko particularly during autumn months when the tree leaves changed colors. It was a bit far from the town center but the environment should be much relaxing. There were tracks leading to the fall. For those who used public transportation, it was necessary to check the time table for public buses.

We were here during autumn and the colours were nice. There were trails leading to the waterfall, which are mostly flat, with some staircases, hence make the journey easy.
The only thing I would advise other travellers to be more careful is about the bus timetable. As we did not check the bus timetable, we did not know about the frequency of the bus. Because of this, after enjoying ourselves with the autumn colours, we decided to walk back to the Toby Nikko Station because the bus would come after an hour. It was a 3-4km walking journey, and honestly speaking this distance wasn’t very far. But it was a little overwhelming and we told ourselves that we should linger for a little longer near the waterfall till the bus came. We were saved by a local couple who offered to take us back to the station. We were very grateful for this.

It’s an easy bus ride from Nikko. The bus stop is a 10-15 minute walk to the viewing platform for the falls. Do check the return bus schedule before you head out.
The walk in to the falls through a woodland forest involves a gravel path, uneven slippery steps and wooden walkways. Do take care.
We spent a day visiting 3 falls and although this wasn’t the best, the autumn foliage here was better than elsewhere. We were surprised that the platform was so far from the falls but the view was smashing.
On your way out, climb up the stone stairs to the rest house café for a grand final photo-op view toward the falls.

We took a walk here late one afternoon and were pleased we did. It's a pleasant walk in lovely surroundings. A nice cake shop/restaurant if you want a pitstop. Very scenic.

If you are in Nikko area do not miss to stop buy and visit these falls. It is on your way back to Tokyo. From the parking you need to walk around 5-10 minutes on nice path through the forest.path will bring you to the vie wpoint where you can see falls on oposite hill. It was raining with lots of fog but view was definetely magnficient
Waterfall has a higher verical drop than Niagra . It is just 7 meteres wide and you can not see whole falls due to forest

We arrived in Nikko and the tourist office recommended it. They were very informative with their instructions and a bus came right away. We arrived and found out the next bus was coming in 2 hours. It took 5 minutes to reach the viewing platform. In the distance I could see a waterfall. Just okay. Tried to run and get the bus before it left but too late. We walked back to town. Approximately 45 minute walk. Complete waste of time
The tourist office should have never pushed it on us knowing we were there only for the day.

If you are in Nikko during autumn, and you are not breve enough to go up Chuzenji, then this is the nearest waterfall near the temples and the Tobu Nikko Station. If you are using the heritage pass, you have to buy the additional pass to go to this falls (Kirifuri falls pass). There is a coffee shop/restaurant near the falls, which offers a great vantage point. It's not as pretty as Kegon, but worth a visit too.
