Go get the combo ticket and visit this place and the Italian villa next door. Sit by the corridor to enjoy the scenes, relax and chill at this beautiful lake side setting.

Nikko area can be really crowded with lots of people, so it is nice to take a peaceful walk along the Lake Chuzenji to this villa. It is full of interesting and historically important photos and displays. There is a nice cafe if you want to relax with English tea and scones. The lake is beautiful and lots of photo opportunity as well. Enjoy the peace and quiet. For more, you can look at "hiddenjapanguide" for details.

Although we had a little trouble finding this place (the smartphone map wasn't up to the task and we had to resort to a road-side billboard), we were very glad we persevered.

The villa was designed by Sir Ernest Satow, who, as a British diplomat, made Japan his life's work. He is the author of a number of books on Japan, including the first guide book to Nikko in English. He was a strong advocate of Nikko as the spot for Westerners to escape the summer heat of Tokyo.

The house is a lovely blend of east and west. But the real treasure is its situation--just above the lake with the entire lake-side of the house being windows. Well, technically the space is a veranda, but it's wide, furnished and can be enclosed, so it's like its own room.

The house was beautifully restored before it was opened to the public last year. The rooms contain period furniture/decorations and lots of displays on the life of Sir Ernest and of other famous visitors, including another of my idols, Isabella Bird, who apparently stayed here for 6 weeks during her 1878 sojourn in Japan.

On the top floor, part of the house has been converted to a tea room, and what better afternoon occupation that to take high tea at the British Embassy Villa!

This attraction is very near the Italian Embassy on Lake Chuzenji, both of which are a good walk from the center of the town. The walk, while along the lake is not particularly pretty and there is not much to do on the walk. As much as I enjoy exploring and walking, we didn't find this worth the trip.

Fully agree with Rie's Dec.2017 review. I day-tripped from Nikko on a heaving bus but almost all opted for other sights. I used the boat - with English commentary - to reach the villa, then walked the pleasant 1.5 miles back to the town centre for the return bus.
The sun was out, the sky clear & the views were stunning. The setting, whilst having my tea & scones could not, for me, have been bettered. In addition to that, there's much (in English) info, photos etc displayed about the villa's creation & its diplomat creator: I found this most interesting.
It's several degrees cooler at Chuzenji than Nikko, especially on the lake, so dress accordingly.

We did not know what to expect when we decided to walk around Lake Chuzenji to this park. When we approached the restored British Embassy Villa, it looked like a simple black building. Entering the building, the views from the veranda of the lake and surrounding mountains were absolutely breathtaking. The villa was built by Ernest Satow during the Meiji period, and the historical information about him and his family was very enlightening. One leaves with greater appreciation of international relations and diplomacy. Also recommend having tea and the best scones on the second floor.
The Italian Embassy's former villa is also part of the park.

The British Embassy Villa Memorial Park combined with the Italian Embassy Villa Memorial Park need to be added to the list of sites near Lake Chuzenji. The former villa for the British embassy is a fine destination if you have an interest at all in culture, history, or a pleasing natural environment ... and if that isn't enough, they also serve delicious scones and tea on fine china. The newly restored villa on the lake provides a dramatic backdrop for photos. It is a very pleasant 30-minute walk from the main street although the bus also goes there.
