Small but nice looking little temple complex a bit outside the center of Kawagoe. It can be walked from the station though but there is also a connection by city bus. The park surrounding this small complex is very nice as well. Astonishingly we were definitely not the only visitors so apparently this complex has somewhat of a good reputation for being visited.

This was part of a larger complex of temples and shrines on the edge of Kawagoe. Orginally built in 830 this came to prominence in the 17th century and is now the head temple of the tendai Sect (no idea what that is) in the Kanto Region (know what that is). Within the walls of the temple and buildings is an old Edo castle all reasonably well maintained..

My girlfriend and I visited Hon Kawagoe over the New Year Break. When we got off the Seibu Yellow Line at the Hon Kawagoe station we grabbed the Koedo Famous Locations Loop bus to Nakain, the middle of three temples that together make up the Three Temple Complex in Hon Kawagoe. Famous for being the origin of Kawagoe and Sayama Tea, it was originally the main temple until Tenkai Soujou came to Kitain to live. Of the three temples, Nakain has the best photo opportunities with cheery blossoms blooming even in winter. Unlike their spring counterparts the winter cherries are not as lush but a perfect compliment to winter nonetheless.

When we arrived, the grounds keepers were building the kadomatsu - a house for ancestral spirits and the gods of harvest, and I was really excited to see it. Despite their simplicity the bamboo shrines are an important part of the New Year season.

The temple is not too big - the entire grounds can be explored in 30 minutes but it helps to have someone local that can explain everything as that offers a much deeper look into the history.

We were just that lucky - as I was filming this ojiichan (gramps) showed up. After introductions and a brief chat, we walked through the temple with him as he explained the different aspects of it, namely how the graveyard for the monks is sacred and had been there for a thousand years and that the temple was known as the birthplace of Satoyama and Kawagoe tea.

We concluded the tour and parted ways but ojiichan came back to also show us the winter cherry blossoms. We were thankful and after another quick chat we went off to the next leg of our Hon Kawagoe adventure.

In terms of this review, am I saying that you might run into an old man tour guide or that the winter cherry is better than he spring cherry...maybe, maybe not but if you appreciate the world and want to experience the world as it once was - Nakain (as well as Kitain and Minamiin) are worth the visit.

The KOEDO Loop bus drops you off at the entrance to Naka-in. I went in Spring while the cherry blossoms were in full bloom and it was amazingly beautiful.

There is a small garden to explore which was very pretty and the temple itself was nice.

I spent about 20 minutes and felt I had seen everything then set off towards Kita-in which was just a couple minutes away on foot.

It is well worth popping in if you are riding the loop bus but I would not go out of your way to visit it on it's own.

Beautiful. Especially with the Sakura in bloom. Walked around the garden. Very nice and peaceful. Don't skip it. Good recommendation by the tourist office. Didn't go into the temple buildings.

What else can I say? 100 character minimum. .. used to be the main temple. Before it was taken over by kitain temple. Great walk from kawagoe station.
