Great for kids under 8 years old

If your child is serious about exploring space or wants to learn more about Japan's space programs they will be disappointed by this museum. On the day we visited the museum was filled with pre-school children that considered the exhibits an extension of their school play equipment.

Primary school and junior high school would enjoy some of the exhibits that illustrate scientific concepts related to space. Most of the exhibits have English and Japanese descriptions. However, compared to Questacon in Canberra, or the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida, it had no serious exhibits.

We were also disappointed that the times for the planetarium listed on the website were not available when we visited. The morning sessions had been pre-booked by tour groups. The midday session was for pre-school children and based on the cartoon character An Pan Man. The earliest scientific presentation was at 4pm.

The museum is an easy walk from the JR station, though I suggest you bring your Google map with you as the route is not as well signposted as other Japanese museums.

The food options are limited but they do have a great area where you can eat your own bento.

A full day outing for kids

like many science oriented museums, this place can often be an earful, especially on rainy weekend-holidays. However, it is an interesting and fun place for children, especially of elementary school age, who can also get guidance from helpful staff. Parents have a good science library (Japanese language mostly) to update their knowledge, as there are confy chairs on every floor. Bringing your own lunch saves time, which flies quickly in such an environment.
We will surely visit again, but on a weekday!

A really great place for kids!
Visted the Yokohama Science Center with my 9 year old son today. It was slightly crowded (being a Saturday) but nothing compared to back home in the states. Everything in this center is HANDS ON which makes it great for young and older children. They have several floors, each with a different theme, to keep kids occupied for hours. Even the younger kids can enjoy time here, since touching and exploring are encouraged.

*****EVERY DISPLAY IS EXPLAINED IN ENGLISH!!........Most staff cannot speak English, although they are still readily willing to help demonstrate any display.....All staff were friendly !

Admission is pretty cheap too....only 200yen for kids....and 400yen for adults. They also have a small place you can eat....I believe they had hotdogs, hamburgers, and french fries available. Overall a great place to bring kids on a rainy day....or any day!
