梅の季節は梅見で有名なところです。
江戸時代に周辺は梅の名所で杉田梅林といわれていたそうです。境内には200本あまりの梅の木があります。
ただこの時期はまだまだ咲いてはいません。

牛頭山妙法寺という日蓮宗の寺で、杉田にあります。かつてこの辺りは梅林だったそうで、天覧の梅の木があります。あと身延山から日蓮上人が持ってきて植えたという樹齢700年の榧（カヤ）の木もあり、敷地の外には、かながわ名木100選に選ばれたビャクシンもあります。ビャクシンは推定600年で、落雷のためか幹の北側の樹皮がはげ、黒くなっていて、３つに分かれているのに、南東側に枝を伸ばして葉をつけています。生命力を感じます。

Visited during the plum season. Different kinds of plums are quietly arranged. There are also big old pine trees. Quiet and nice place. Parking is available.

ＪＲ根岸線新杉田駅から徒歩10分程度のところにあります。杉田は江戸時代から梅の名所として知られており、境内には約50本の梅の木があり、初春に見ごろとなります。

新杉田駅近くは埋立地ができ、シーサイドラインが八景島方面に走行し、開発著しいが、西南方向に歩くと、旧海岸線の丘陵があり、この地域は昔懐かしい感じがします。
妙法寺はこの一角にある由緒ある日蓮宗寺院で、手入れが行き届き、隣接する墓地もとても広いです。ビャクシンの名木が近くにあり、とても素晴らしい姿をしています。思わず見とれてしましました。

お寺のある杉田はかつて梅林で有名だったようで、境内には多くの梅の木があり、さながら小さな梅林でした。お寺の向かい側には神奈川名木１００選に選ばれた樹齢６００年のビャクシンの古木があります。かつては１００メートルほど東にある国道１６号線が海岸線だったとのことで、近隣の杉田八幡宮とあわせて、この地の歴史を感じることができる貴重な建造物だと思います。
