This is a small geo museum and is relatively near the gift and restaurant stops. It charges a nominal fee and you can pretty much read and view everything in about an hour. It gives a good insight in the developement of the volcanic activity, sulphur vents and hotsprings etc. It has sufficient descriptions in English enough not to overwhelm you.

This is nice small museum with loads of information and fun for kids. You will learn about the history of hakone area and some replicas of how the hot spring works. There are also some classic pictures dated back to 1926. Time to spend 20 - 30 mins is enough for me. Worth to visit if you are interested in hot spring and science behind that.

Even if you are not into museums this is worth a stop. You will learn that the Onsen hotsprings water is artifically made, and how it is done, as well as learn about the geology of the area.

The museum can be done in around 30 minutes but is nevertheless worth a visit. At the price of ¥100 per person it is practically free (someone on this site said that with the Hakone free pass entrance IS free, but this is incorrect) and is more than worth what you see. The museum provides an interesting history of the volcano, and provides eye witness accounts of when it erupted. After visiting the museum be sure to buy some black eggs - it is 5 eggs for ¥500, with each egg supposedly extending your life by seven years.

Not complex or overwhelming, this museum manages to explain the areas geography and the working of a volcano and the mineral springs it creates in a simple way, with enough information for those who like to collect facts.
It is a cheap visit [only Y100], and well worth the time

When in Hakone, the visit to this museum is combined with the ride on the Hakone Ropeway and see the Owakudani thermal valley. Here you get information on the surrounding volcanoes and how hot spring water is produced. Just 100 yen per person, it is value for money. You also get a chance to buy the black hard boiled eggs at 5 for 500 yen. A must do for all tourist when here but the eggs taste normal. You will be amazed at the size of the valley.

I wish we had more time to visit this nice and interesting small museum, but the bus was due to leave. Give yourself some time. Not everything is translated into English

Cost 100 yen, which was good value for a really informative small museum. Plenty of English descriptions

This is the peak point of the Hakone circular tour cable car trip. This is not much of a museum, but the place is geothermally active with smoke coming from the ground. Black eggs, supposedly boiled by the volcanic mud, are sold (I am not sure if they were indeed boiled by the mud or just dies black - they taste like any egg).
The site offers good view of the mountain panorama around Hakone. On a clear day you can see Mount Fuji.
A bit of tourist trap but really quite unique due to the strong volcanic activity.
The cable car trip to and from is very nice with good view.
Don't miss the Hakone Circular Tour and you will get here anyway, spend an hour to look around.

A small museum but small entrance fee, was just 100 yen, the illustrations and working models are good, they explain in Japanese and English the geology of the area. It is suitable for the young and old.
