Fortunately we got to do a lot of this rail trip although buses were needed for a part that was closed. The countryside was beautiful even on a dull day. The old railcar creaked and rattled but was nice and warm on a wintery day.

A unique ride on a historic rail line. It seems to serve the locals very well. It was a slow smooth ride with an idyllic view of the mountain scenery, shops and houses so close to the rail line. It was a short steep ride to the stop where we had to disembark in order to catch the cable car. Short but sweet ride.

Thoroughly enjoyed the leisurely ride on an old tram down the mountain. There's one track and we happened to be there during hydrangea season, which lined both sides of the track. It's interesting how they work the switchbacks. The negative is the seats are a little uncomfortable.

The Tozan railway climbs up Hakone's mountains and is what most tourists will use when arriving. Some sections are so steep that there are switchbacks where the train moves all the way forward then reverses backwards to continue up. It's quite a neat experience. This all of course makes the train quite slow, which is fantastic for sightseeing. The Tozan is entirely covered by the Freepass for unlimited rides so I highly suggest any Hakone visitor to first buy the pass. This way you not only save money but it's also extremely convenient since you don't need to figure out indiivdual ride fares (saves a lot of time and frustration). Note that the Tozan line changes trains at Hakone-Yumoto station, where continuing onwards to Odawara station the train is actually a normal style heavy gauge railway.

If you don't like heights, sit on the aisle. Anyone at a window will have a great view though as the train reverses and crosses over the gorge several times. One of the more fun transport options along the Hakone circuit.

Suggest come early as crowd could be quite terrible if you depart late.
Good experience to ride with steep path car, good scene thought, children very happy with the ride.

At peak times in Hakone such as Peak Autumn Colour, be prepared for very lengthy queues which loop endlessly and at times extend outside most transportation terminals.
Vehicle traffic becomes congested; Hakone Tozen bus services also get held up, visitors abandon buses in favour of getting around on the Hakone Ropeway which then worsens the lengthy queues. Tourist groups are mostly Japanese who take these delays cheerfully, completely unfazed.
Plan to start your journey as early as possible, establish the first departure times, avoiding tour groups which enables a traveller to stay ahead of the queues at least for a while!
The Passes which cover the most buses, cablecar, ropeway, train, and lake cruise, are convenient. A One Day Pass on a busy day is a rushed visit, a Two Day Pass, and overnight accommodation in the area is more comfortable. A three day pass even more relaxed although further accommodation costs are incurred.
If you have a Suica Card, this can also be used on the Hakone Tozen Buses.
The Odakyu website is a very comprehensive site; an excellent tool for sightseeing planning and transportation options in the Hakone area.

We took the train from Odawara to Gora and did not realize that we supposed to change train at Hakone Yumoto. When the train reached Hakone Yumoto, it stopped for a while then turned back to Odawara. We had to got off the train at the next stop and got on another train. If you come from Odawara, remember to get off at Hakone Yumoto and change.
The view of the second leg of the train was nice. It was interesting to see the train changed driver and zigzag up the mountain. I think the view would be much nicer in spring with hydrangea in full bloom. We still saw some but way passed their prime.

If you are taking the Hakone Tozan Railway from Odawara station to Gora Station (to catch the Hakone Cable Car), please make sure you change trains at Hakone Yumoto station. The does not go all the way to Gora. I made the mistake of staying in the train, when it reached Hakone Yumoto station and ended up going in the reversed direction back to Odawara station.

Cute train up the mountain before the ropeway. Lots of little Hakone stations. Super cute and courtesy train guard announcing and checking all doors driving up.

We are a family of 5, 2 adults and 3 children all under 10. We are going to purchase a Hakone Free Pass to travel from Shinjuku. Is it better to do this on a weekday or weekend as we have a week in Tokyo?

I'd agree that a weekday is probably better - as many Japanese will travel at weekends to Hakone to enjoy the countryside - particularly in autumn when the autumn colour will be great. The line also has many hydrangeas planted along it.
what are the opening hours of the trains and other modes of transport in hakone? im planning a trip there and i really want to be be able to see a lot

Hi
Not sure of all opening hours but we managed to get train from tokyo to hakone then train to gora then cablecar to lake and boat across lake and public bus back to gora to stay overnight in one day with no great hurry and plenty of stops. Left tokyo approx 9am, back to gora approx 5pm. Everything closes early in gora (by 5.30pm) so i wouldnt expect late buses or trains in that area but there may be slightly more in the main centre of hakone.
Hi, I will be driving to Hakone this coming October, I'm thinking to park my car at hakone yumoto station and begin my trip there. Below are my questions :
1) Is there any parking provided there and if yes how much is the fee?
2) Can the Hakone Free Pass be purchased at this station?
3) Will be bringing my 5 years old daughter, does she need the free pass?
Thank you!

1. No point driving to Yumoto; not just about parking but it is more difficult to get there than train. Park at Odawara or any other major train stations where parking is ample. Yumoto is a bustling place with lots of tourists almost anytime of the year.
2. Child ticket recommended unless u plan to put her on your lap on rides which are full
3. Hakone Free Pass is inclusive of train rides, Tozan Railway, Ropeway, Cruise and very well connected and little chance to get lost as very good signs and directions in English with staff stationed along the way to guide tourists.
4. Shinjuku, Odawara stations offer Hakone free pass or any major travel agents like JTB, HIS. Online is best though check if they mail it or you need to collect at a specific location nearest to you. Travel agents also can send the pass to your home or desired address.
Travel light with your daughter as everything is available along the way; water, food etc though up on Hakone, temperature is usually lower than at the foot so a depending on the month of visit, bring a jacket. if child is not able to walk too much, then bring along a stroller which is easier and fast to fold up as will need to fold it up on Ropeway etc. Avoid weekends and public holidays if you can. always check the Public holidays in China (must avoid) as it will be packed with major groups....

You may want to consider the Hakone Free pass. See my review on this and there are a lot more details on planning and the pass as well journey time/details from Tokyo.
