Visited on a weekday at 11:00. You can bring your pet with you on your lap, or in a cart or buggy. The Botanical Garden is a great place to visit if you have a pet with you. The Asian skunk cabbage and dogtooth violets were in full bloom. We enjoyed a 40-minute stroll while admiring the wetland flowers. You can also look down on Owakudani and Lake Ashi.

I would strongly recommend the Hakone Botanical Garden of Wetlands (also called Hakone Shisseikaen) to people who are in Hakone area and like/love plants. The gardens itself is not that big I think that 1.5h is enough to walk slowly through the whole place. The landscaping which fused very naturally to the surroundings and the plant collections is just breathtaking. In addition to Japanese, sings are also written in English (+ plants will also have Latin names). We were there at the end of March and despite only few plants blooming I found this place just amazing.
The entrance fee was 700 yen/adults (as of March 2015), but with a Hakone free pass you will get a discount of 100yen.
The Hakone Tozan bus S line will bring you in front of the gardens's entrance. You can take the S line from Gora -koen (Gora Park station) which takes about 30min to reach the botanic garden.

Hakone Botanical Garden of Wetlands (箱根湿生花園, Hakone Shisseikaen) is a botanical garden in the Fuji Hakone Izu National Park. Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park (富士箱根伊豆国立公園 Fuji-Hakone-Izu Kokuritsu Kōen) is a national park in Yamanashi, Shizuoka, and Kanagawa Prefectures and western Tokyo Metropolis, Japan. The garden was founded in 1976 as a place to preserve and exhibit over 1700 varieties of native Japanese hydrophytes and alpine plants.

The garden, as its name reveals, focuses on plants that grow in wetlands, rivers, and lakes. This is the largest outdoor garden I had ever visited. They are well organized and group the plants in areas. We followed the boardwalk and its signs to see the eight designated areas of flowers/plants. The designated areas are Plants of Deciduous Forest area, Plants of Meadow area, Plants of Marsh area, Plants of Fen area, Plants of Alpine Garden area, Bog area, Sengokuhara Marsh area, and Swamp Forest area. We visited the garden in the mid May, and there were so many differently colored flowers. In the past, we did not know the names of the flowers/plants a majority of the time when we visited a garden because they were not labeled. Here they carefully included the names both in Japanese and English. To make it easier for me to remember the flowers that I loved, I just took the photo and its description. In the season we visited, the flowers of primrose, sawaoguruma, kumagaisou, choujisou, iris laevigata, yama-shakuyaku, bog rosemary, and mi yamaodamaki were blooming. I spot a flower that I never saw in my life; a light blue flower – the blue poppy that really attracted my attention. When we were in the Swamp Forest area, I felt so excited to see a totally different view of the garden - a mountain view from the wetland. It is a large flat plain with mountains in the backdrop. The ranch-like fence makes the whole view really stunning. We took at least 20 + minutes sitting on the bench to enjoy the view and the breeze cooling down the heat. Depending on how much you want to see in the garden, you can easily spend 1 hour to a whole day there if you love flowers and taking photos.

The best time to visit is from mid May to late June when the spring/summer flowers are blooming. If you are a flower lover, you should visit this place to see and learn about an incredible variety of flowers in one trip. The shop sells a selection of souvenirs, including seeds and local cookies. The garden only opens 9 am to 5 pm from late March to end of November. You can reach there by Hakone Tozan bus ride to "Shissei-kaen-mae" station.

Various plants and flowers especially from the local marshes, rivers and mountains are planted and well taken care of. Really nice walking through the forests and paths by seeing those. It took us about 1.5 hours to see everything.

We went to the Hakone Botanical Wetlands on the day we arrived in Hakone. We were staying at a ryokan in walking distance. It was the rainy season and that day the rain did not stop. It got surprisingly cold, keep in mind this place is more elevated than other places of Japan. We liked the garden, there were not many plants in bloom. I would definitely recommend going there if you are staying in the proximity

I recommend to visit Hakone Shissei Kaen if you love flowers and plants. The garden provides brochures 3 times/months (ca. 20 JPY, only in Japanese) and it tells season's flowers and plants. The garden helds occationally exibitions about poppies, cherry blossoms, an insectivorous plants and maples.

The best part of the park was all the way in the back of the trails, where you get some great views of the plains leading up to the small mountains behind the garden. Great, contained area for kids to explore.

My husband is really into nature. and so we enjoyed coming here. The garden is a very pleasant place to stroll. There are lots of pretty flowers including the blue poppy, and there are marshes, meadows, forests, ponds and streams. It has a nice walking path to follow.
