Lots to do in the Mt. Hakone area, but most visitors include a ride up the ropeway for views of Mt. Fuji. The ropeway also passes over the Owaku-dani sulfur fields of steaming vents. Supposedly, the "black eggs" that are sold at the top of the mountain are boiled in the sulfur water which is what colors them black.

A spectacular volcanic mountain that is dormant but still spews sulphuric fumes and generates internal heat contributing to local hotsprings. We were not able to view Mt Fuji on this trip but the crater landscape was quite intriguing and awe inspiring. Overall an amazing adventure, lots to see and take in.

This is fun to get up and see. Steam still gushes from the ground and you can see yellow sulfur all around. The tourist shop at the top sells black eggs (basically hard boiled eggs that purportedly are cooked in the steam and whose shells turn black) that taste fine. Fun to heck out at the end of the ropeway ride.

While dwarfed by nearby Mt Fuji, Mt Hakone is still an amazing mountain and a geological wonder taking into consideration the natural attractions that were created out of it’s volcanic activities millenniums ago and you can get to visit or view these attractions such as the onsens, the volcanic valley Owakudani, it’s parasitic cone Mt Ashigara (Kintoki) and the beautiful crater lake Ashinoko. There is something for everyone and not just geological enthusiasts. Most convenient and scenic way up the mountain is by the Hakone Ropeway.
Please note that you are not always guaranteed to see Mt Fuji as it’s often covered by fogs especially during the summer. We were fortunate during our visit that the fog cleared for a few seconds and revealed the summit of Mt Fuji. But still all is not loss if you do not get to see Mt Fuji. Mt Hakone is a wonder by itself.

Great views from here when we visited although apparently the views could have been better on a clearer day so we understood - typical for us but nevertheless we believed that we had really good views and a great experience for being up there

On top of Komagatake peak of Mt. Hakone, you can have a brilliant view of the Pacific. Also, there is the original shrine Mototsumiya of the Hakone Shrine stands on the summit of the peak. It’s a great location for photos of Mt. Fuji on a clear day.

Mt Hakone is a complex volcano in Kanagawa prefecture, truncated by two overlapping calderas. Appears to be quite dormant now, since the last eruption was very long ago. BViews are best enjoyed using the ropeway. Buy a Hakone free pass to enjoy all the sights and different modes of transport.

We rode the ropeway to the summit where we found ourselves in a surreal environment among the clouds and howling winds. The views were spectacular.
