Komagatake Ropeway is certainly better than Hakone ropeway is is less crowded. You can see Mount Fuji right in front. The old Hakone shrine and rough trails offering view all the way to Pacific Ocean from Kamagatake mountain is just serene ! we were fortunate to take the ride on a clear day to enjoy the scenery.
The ropeway is not covered in Hakone pass but do offer 10% discount with the pass.
We took the Lake Ashi boat ride and got off at Hakone-en. 30min lake side walk from Hakone-en to Komagatake Ropeway is very scenic too if you have time.
Recommend to stay at Ryuguden Ryokan Kanagawa or Hotel Prince, both are just 2 mins away from the Komagatake Ropeway and area itself is great for walks around.

I've been to Hakone and Lake Ashi dozens of times, but this was my first time climbing Mt. Komagatake.
Mt. Fuji was shrouded in clouds, but the other scenery was clearly visible, with the miniature garden-like Lake Ashi at my feet, the skyscrapers of Tokyo and Yokohama in the distance, and even Suruga Bay across Sagami Bay and the Izu Peninsula.
I recommend going on a sunny day with calm winds. The tour is closed on windy days, and was closed the day before I visited.

It was quite chilly and windy at the top; but a very peaceful walk. There were very few people, a quiet corner of Japan we very much enjoyed.
The view of Mt Fuji san was clear and unobstructed. The trails were well marked with uneven steps. Good shoes needed. There were elderly travellers having a difficult time on the rocky paths. Air was fresh and crisp.

Well organised but dated cable car ride (called a ropeway so don’t be misled). Stunning views over lake Ashi and surrounding area as well as spectacular views on the left going up on a clear day back to Mount Fuji. Small souvenir shop at the summit with cars leaving up and down every 20 minutes. At the base station lots of shops, aquarium, pet zoo and cafes as well as connecting cruise boats and amphibious duck vehicle to take you up and down the lake. Well worth a trip on a clear or part clear day.

Spectacular view of Lake Ashi, and an excellent opportunity to see Mt. Fuji at top. For the speed the tram goes up/down this mountain, the ride is rather smooth and stable. The view from within the tram is great. Take the effort to arrive early so that you can enjoy all views.

look, if you have been taking a ropeway at the blackcomb or the peak2peak at canada, or even the simplest ropeway at hongkong, you will be freaked out. this place is ancient.
the steel all rust, and it is dangerous. the place is not taken care off. and its only 6 of us and group from singapore who went there at that time. they only have 2 gondolas that come every 10mins.
it was snowing in sudden and freezing, we didnt go or come close to the temple. but spending 2000 for this? hmm I find it not worth it. may be because of the wheater? we also didnt get to see the fujiyama san.

This is a cable car ride that will give you magnificent views of Mount Fuji ....... on a clear day. It is worth remembering that of all the days in the year, for 70% of those days Mount Fuji is in cloud no matter where you are in Japan. It's pot luck really - something that cannot be controlled but fortunately on the day that we visited, the visibility was excellent.
We took the cable car ride to the top of this attraction - oh my, it was so cold up there, so remember to take a coat, but excellent views and not to be missed.
At base camp there are many shops, a café and bakery and good toilet facilities.
You need to be on a tour bus trip to visit this attraction and if you are going there from the cruise terminal, it is a 1.75 hours drive ....... each way.
It's a must see though ... just do it!!

This is A ropeway with excellent views during and post journey. We took this combo of bus, cruise and a ropeway tour. We were delighted that we took this tour. The ropeway provides a glimpse of Mt Fuji on one side and the beautigul Hakone Lake on the other side.

Not to be confused with the Hakone ropeway, this cable car takes you to Komagatake peak. You can experience different weather changes as you go up so layer clothing helps. We started at the bottom with hot and humid weather but as we got to the top it got foggy and it was cool. If you get to the top and it's overcast give it a minute and hope it clears up because Mototsumiya shrine will show up like magic. You can't go into this shrine but the way it sits by itself on top of the mountain it provides a very serene moment. Panoramic views of lake Ashi, mount Fuji and surrounding area. There's also hiking trails leading from the summit to the shores of lake Ashi but nothing beats the views from the cable car. Take your time it can be a great picnic spot if the weather allows it.

HI, How do you get to the ropeway for Mt Komagatake by public transport ?
John
Written July 18, 2019
We went by cab from HakoneYumoto station because we were trying to get there before Mt Fuji clouded over.
However, the base station is called Hakone-En. There is a transit search page for the area (search for hakone-tozanbus Hakone Route Finder - can't post a link)
There is a bus that goes down the lake to Hakone-En from the north (Line W). How you get to it depends on where you are coming from. There are several bus lines that go to Togendai as well as the Hakone Ropeway from Sounzan at the top of the Gora cable car.

Hello where are visiting Japan in 4 weeks and just want to ask if you are referring to Hakone Ropeway as being close or the Hakone Komagatake Ropeway which is a different one
Written July 5, 2019
The Hakone ropeway is probably the more interesting if it’s open
Written July 6, 2019
How long is the whole journey last starting from Hakone station ?
Written October 12, 2018
if taking public bus from hakone-yumoto station, it's 45 minutes to hour and 15 depending on the bus you take (one way).

Hi, Just a question regarding the ropeway... Is this the same ropeway as the Mt. Komogatake Hakone Ropeway or are there two separate ropeways around the Mt. Fiji area. We will be staying in Hakone overnight and trying to get to the Mt. Fuji area for a 1/2 day of sightseeing.
Did you visit Mt. Fuji as an independent traveller or on a tour?
Thanks for the insight,
Kathy

I don't know if there are two. I suspect this is the only one. It is perfect for a great view of Fuji, assuming that there is no cloud cover. We were on a tour. The gift shop at the Hakone ferry origin is a good shop with good selection and prices, better than at the Ropeway base.
I hope this helps! Enjoy

Stupid question, but is the Ropeway a cable car? Even google can't tell me!
Written June 13, 2017
yes it is just a cable car.

We used the public transit and walked from the bus stop. I think I remember seeing parking at the base, but I don't know about the top. (Isn't the point to ride up to the top to see the view from there? If it were easy to get to the top by car, I am not sure that there would need to be a ropeway,) They might have added parking for the shops at the top after it was built and became popular. Sorry, I just don't remember, so I'm not much help on this one.

Hi,
We are planning to ride this during our day stop at Hakone so it would be great if people could answer these questions I have:
1. How much does it cost for a round trip
2. what are the opening-closing times (will help order the things we do)
3. How long would it take to ride the ropeway from the bottom, walk around the shrine and come back down?
Thanks in advance!
Written April 30, 2016
1080 Yen round trip, open from 8 or 8.30 AM to 3.30PM.
It took us about 1 hour, and only because it was freezing cold, in good weather you will want to spend longer at the top, as the views are awesome
