I was surpised to find the shinkansen and JR Narita express to not run perfectly on time as most foreigners hear about Japan. 17 minute connection time in Tokyo was not sufficient with 10 minute late train arrivals. Seats are reserved, so you can get stuck without yout seat if you don't leave an hour for transfer between transfers in Tokyo station. Be careful because ticket agents may not leave sufficient teanfer time, and there is little recourse for this.

We used this service center to help us buy train tickets and to get information about Narita. It was a very positive experience.

Plenty of seating, helpful policemen, great service at the JR East office to get our JR Pass. Very efficient security check and great transport links.

Narita Airport is located far from downtown Tokyo, and taking a taxi from the airport to your hotel in Tokyo can set you back a whopping Euro 250. Airport buses can take anything between 75 minutes and double that time, depending on traffic. The best and easiest option to go to Tokyo from Narita is the Narita Express. It leaves from tracks in the basement of Terminal One. You can buy tickets at the JR East Travel Center - JPY 400 for a return ticket (if your return trip is within 2 weeks of the initial trip) if you show a foreign ID (passport or other). Takes only 55 minutes from Narita Terminal On e to Tokyo Station in central Tokyo..

Was travelling on one of those JR tickets that made it all free to tour the country on the trains - the lady was incredibly polite and helpful directing me in the right direction to the required train. Her help was pretty much replicated throughout Japan so good for them.
